Experienced and Creative Tutor in Math, Science, & ACT prep

I've been a tutor for the past 8 years. I started tutoring/teaching as a college student, and I've loved every moment. It's so rewarding to see a student's growth in a subject area. I've provided Praxis and ACT prep to students as well as provided help for subject are state tests such as Biology and U.S. History. I love all math and science related subjects and excel at helping students relate to them.
I prefer inquiry based learning in which I utilize the facilitator and "personal model" methods to help students improve their independence, increase their confidence to explore subjects independently, and show them first hand how to comprehend concepts

I worked on a family literacy program at the Mississippi Childrens Museum, called Planting the Seeds to Read, which entailed teaching children literacy skills and coaching parents in literacy strategies for home. I teach at Canton Young Filmmakers Workshops every summer.

IMPROVE READING AND WRITING SCORES IN CLASS AND ON THE ACT.

I have been an AP Literature and Composition teacher as well as Twelfth grade Language Arts instructor for over 16 years. I am acutely aware of the needs of students as it relates to mastering reading and writing skills. I have also taught an ACT Prep course for the past 5 years after extensive training at workshops and conferences. I know the importance of identifying weaknesses in reading, writing, and on standardized tests such as the ACT and directing my instruction to those weaknesses. I teach others by first trying to understand the way that person learns best. If I find that one way does not work for that student, I will try a different approach. I have found that many students have an easier time grasping basic understanding by using real life examples to which they can relate. Once a basic understanding is achieved, further learning can begin. I believe it is important for a student to feel they can be honest about their progress and feel comfortable asking questions. I always encourage students when they are on the right track in order to promote self confidence. When students feel smart they are encouraged to reach greater learning levels.
