I have obtained my masters degree in education and now have three years experience teaching math. In particular, I have instructed 7th and 8th grade middle school students as well as 9th – 12th grade high school students. The following are two of my favorite experiences with math tutoring. One high school sophomore was making a D in geometry and needed help studying for her first semester final exam. After I worked with her for only three hours she missed making a B by one percentage point and never made less than a B on any subsequent quizzes or tests under my tutelage. Another middle school girl actually cried when she first had to work with the concept of estimating. In this case I set aside the prescribed materials, created several new estimating concepts and within fifteen minutes she was laughing and suggesting additional estimation applications with the new materials. I believe my success in these instances was because of my ability to bring life to the topic and to read the intellectual and emotional state of my students.
