Unique, powerful fusion of counseling and teaching.

28 years of tutoring for SAT. 15 years for ACT, GMAT, GRE, LSAT, etc. I have devised unique guessing strategies for multiple choice tests that by themselves have significantly raised students' scores. I have gone to Paris, France, all expenses paid, to do an intense 2-week SAT prep session. I love what I do- every child is a unique individual to me, and tutoring is what I am born to do.
I have 10 years of full-time counseling experience and 25 years of part-time teaching experience. As a counselor, I work in a completely individualized way with each student- sometimes emphasizing tricks, techniques, timing and speed reading, sometimes emphasizing content.

While I was in high school, I took honors courses and graduated with a 4.0 GPA. I tutored an 8th grade-9th grade boy in TCAPS preparation and helped him complete homework in Math (pre-algebra, algebra, and pre-geometry), Science (biology), and English. I tutored him for two years. After I graduated high school I was accepted to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where I am currently in the spring semester of my sophomore year. I will be returning to Johnson City this summer and am available to tutor. I babysit two young boys currently, one of whom is 5 and I help him with kindergarten homework, such as learning words and reading. I am capable of helping with all ages. I can tutor most any subject through high school with the exception of advanced chemistry and calculus, and would need to be refreshed on pre-cal and algebra ll before being comfortable helping students with it. Identifying a person’s learning style is the key to successful comprehension of a given subject matter. My teaching style involves recognizing concepts that the person does find interesting to help them relate to and understand what they are trying to learn. I like working with children of all ages. I believe that children of all ages and cultural backgrounds can learn if given a proper chance. I even managed to teach children in South Korea, when I didn't speak Korean at all and my students had limited English skills. I taught them through games and use of our workbooks and student books. I believe in making learning a fun experience with lots of games and an easy going manner. If the kid is bored or unhappy, it is going to make it much harder for the child to learn. I try to also reach my students at the level where they are at. If a student is at a lower level of understanding, I will start with them there and slowly challenge and build them to a higher level.
I graduated college in 1985 and then pursued many different jobs over the last 25 years. My degree in History/Political Science allowed me to be something of a jack-of ... read more

For the past seven years I have studied mathematics. Most of those years were spent at Wichita State University. I received my M.S. degree in mathematics while studying dynamical systems under Christian Wolf. I worked as a graduate teacher by instructing courses in Algebra, Trigonometry, etc and by tutoring in all mathematics courses offered at the university through the Calculus sequence. More recently, I have privately tutored students in Statistics, Calculus, Algebra, and GRE preparation in Asheville, NC.
I approach every student as a unique individual with his or her own struggles. In general, I teach mathematics in a direct and simple way. I do not treat the subject as a game or a bag of tricks. Once the fundamental concept is understood, then I push the students knowledge of applications. However, it is sometimes helpful to open up topics with simple examples. I belie ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

After finishing my Bachelor of Arts in English, I decided to teach English as a Second Language in China. I enjoyed my time there but returned home after a year to be closer to my family. The bulk of my classroom experience comes from teaching high school English in Charlotte, North Carolina. I spent five years teaching at Dore Academy, and I learned a great deal about teaching and tutoring students with a wide range of abilities. I then decided to once again teach abroad. I briefly moved to Seattle, Washington to complete a graduate level certification in Teaching English as a Second Language. From Seattle I accepted a position to teach at a university in Oaxaca, Mexico. About a year ago I moved back to North Carolina to begin working on my M.A.ED. in school counseling. I am also teaching undergraduates in a counseling class that includes lessons on study skills and test taking.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have wanted to work with kids all my life. I love the way that they learn and think, and how different it is from adults. I studied Biology at Warren Wilson College in hopes of becoming a high school biology teacher. While at college, I did over one hundred hours of service tutoring and mentoring high school and middle school students in Buncombe County. Since graduating in 2009, I decided to take a break from school, and figure out where I wanted to go in life. I have been working at a local after school for elementary aged kids. This experience has taught me a lot about working with younger children and patience.
I believe that a great educator is a great learner. I am always up for learning new things, so that I am able to teach someone else my new skill. I believe in a hands on approach to learning. The more that can be discovered by doing is much more beneficial than just re ... read more

After working with adults and my peers in Boston, I've come to appreciate how rewarding teaching is. I believe that not all students learn the same way and thus aim to be as flexible as possible with each new pupil in order for them to get the most out of our time together. This may include physical expressions of a concept, pictures, or well-organized notes gone over orally. People learn well through positive reinforcement and helping children feel good about themselves while learning will not only provide a strong foundation for self-esteem, but also promote a positive connection with knowledge for years to come. I hope to help shape the future generations to be as aware about the world as they can.
Through the experience of pursuing my degree at Boston University, I was exposed to many different styles of learning and teaching due to my interdisciplinary concentration in Latin A ... read more

I have taught in a variety of environments, from one-on-one to teaching a class of 37 eighth graders at once. I believe that having high expectations for students and exuding confidence in their abilities results in strengthening their own self-confidence and performance. My students have continually thanked me for my patience and willingness to explain concepts in different ways in order to suit their individual learning style. Teaching and tutoring are the most rewarding activities I have ever taken part in and I look forward to continuing to help students become proud of their abilities.
