I feel that I have much aptitude and empathy for students’ successful endeavors in the classroom and I will do my part in making sure that my lessons will be integrated, promote creative thinking, and help the students develop decision- making skills. Social interaction will be used because it is an important aspect of life but individuality will be stressed so that the students learn to be leaders not followers. The concept of being proud of yourself and your beliefs but being aware of other peoples’ beliefs will be used to teach respect for each other and create positive self-esteem in each student. After years in the field of automotive repair, I took an old hobby and turned it into a career. I attended Oakland Community College where I came to understand my abilities, and at the suggestion of professors, went about to earn a BA in history combined with teaching certification in history, political science, and social studies. After completing the BA, I felt that I had merely opened the door to historical thought and process, and continued toward a master's degree. I spent a number of years as a substitute teacher, both long and short term, and with the completion of my MA, returned to Oakland Community College as history professor. My style is akin to the Socratic Method, while I adapt myself to the needs of my students, maintaining a balance between discussion and lecture. My teaching style has defiantly evolved over the years working with a wide variety of students and learning styles. I have learned that each student is unique, and should not be underestimated simply because of a diagnosis or so called disability. I do my best to approach each student s learning style with an open mind and a wide range of possible strategies and tools. My goal as an educator is to ensure that a student reaches her or his potential and beyond. I strive to never underestimate a student or to stagger their intellectual growth by underestimating their potential.
