Students need inspiration!.

I love discovering each individual student and the way to help them learn. My goal is to help students become inspired by their subject matter so that it can play a role in their lives as well as their test scores.
I have led several small groups of teenagers and young adults in Biblical studies at Prairie Hill Evangelical Free Church, several musical groups in practicing and performing, and a summer-long book club at Crown College. In gaining my Associate of Arts degree from Crown College, I also led many study groups on subjects ranging from Chemistry to Physics, English Literature to Creative Writing.

Experienced. Effective. The logical choice.

As a tutor of student athletes at Indiana University, I tutored students from all walks of life. I began by tutoring Biology and Spanish but the need for tutors in English, Writing, Chemistry and Statistics soon arose and I stepped up to fill those positions. Using previous knowledge from AP classes in high school, as well as recent knowledge gained from my classes, I was able to successfully convey new information in easy to understand and applicable terms to these students. This past year I tutored high school math, English and Genetics.
I have always enjoyed teaching others sharing my love of learning. I find it most effective to use a variety of methods to successfully teach information. Material is best learned when it can be easily understood by the student and has practical applications for everyday life. I am not the type of tutor to just hand out answers to problems. I love children and have many tactile and visual learners in my 5th grade class; thus, I use a lot of movement, realia and manipulatives in order to appeal to those learners. Students who typically have this learning style respond well to mnemonic devices, thus I encourage and teach self-created songs and gestures to increase long-term memory. Additionally, in order to increase meta-cognition, the actualization of one’s ability to complete a task(s), I begin lessons with an investment plan which aims to increase interest and motivation.
I am in my first year of teaching 5th grade at Wyatt Edison Charter School in Denver’s Five Points neighborhood. The student population I serve is 75% Latino, 24% African American and 1% Caucasian. I graduated Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Denver with a double major in History and Mathematics. However, I pushed myself to succeed in many other subject areas as well, including Theatre, Spanish and Leadership Studies. I also developed exemplary essay writing skills during my educational experience. As a high school student myself, I took a total of nine AP Exams (AP US History, AP European History, AP Calculus BC, AP Chemistry, AP Physics C, AP English Language, AP English Literature, AP Spanish Language and AP Spanish Literature), and I scored the highest attainable score of five on all of them. During the past two years, I have tutored students in History, Mathematics, Science and Language Arts.

More About This Tutor...

I enjoy tutoring more than just about any other activity. I've taught private piano lessons to kids for four years, and having grown up with a lot of homeschooled siblings, I know how to work with children as well as adults, and I love helping people learn. My strongest subject is English. I have a Bachelor's degree in it from the University of Denver, with a 3.9 GPA and distinction in my major. My senior thesis won an award for the best critical thesis submitted in my graduating class, and I've received a B on a paper only once in my college life—all the rest were A's.
I'm informal but I like to go into depth whenever possible. I focus on explaining things and understanding concepts, rather than just knowing how to complete certain tasks. I think the tutoring experience should be fun and relaxed, as well as intensely educational, because the best learning occurs when both the t ... read more

From college through work in information technology, I found myself tutoring others. It is a joy to see that “Ah, I understand!” look on the face of another. So I switched careers to teach English as a foreign language. At first I taught at a private English school here. Then I spent over 2-1/2 years in China, teaching at universities and tutoring individuals. I've taught oral, written, listening, grammar and business English, as well as American literature and culture. Now I’m back in Denver. One-on-one teaching is the best way to assess a student’s needs and adjust my teaching methods for him/her. If you wish to learn, I can help you and we will both enjoy it. Resume and references are available.
My style is friendly, patient and understanding. I use a variety of techniques, from personal instruction to multi-media material. Depending upon the student’s needs, ... read more

I firmly believe that it is the responsibility of the teacher to find a way to present material so it is understood by the student. Too many schools criticize a child's ability to learn when the child doesn't respond to the school's one method of teaching. I enjoy finding ways to make concepts simple and fun for the child. I love to awaken in my students a fascination for subjects that they believe to be uninteresting or too hard for them.
I am a homeschooling mom of 20 years. I have homeschooled my 6 kids K through 12th grade. Three of my children have graduated my homeschool. Two of those have completed college and one is in her sophomore year. I am still teaching 3 of my kids. Over the years, I have taught every grade and every subject. Most years I have been doing both phonics and physics. Over the past year I have been tutoring kids in math and language arts.

Everyone is different so the first lesson is always about finding the best way to teach that student. The three different ways that people learn are hearing, seeing, and doing but different combinations work better for different children. I believe that all children can meet their potential if they can be taught in an appropriate method. Children should be limited by their own preferences and not by a subject's "difficulty". By finding the proper method a tutor can and should mold their lessons for that method.
I have tutored students in Geometry for half a year officially, and tutored students in physics unofficially for the past 5 years. Before that I worked in a boy scout camp for 6 years and I have always worked well with children. I have earned a BS in Physics which has given me an understanding of many areas of science and my minor in mathmatics has given me a great understan ... read more
