I love discovering each individual student and the way to help them learn. My goal is to help students become inspired by their subject matter so that it can play a role in their lives as well as their test scores.
I have led several small groups of teenagers and young adults in Biblical studies at Prairie Hill Evangelical Free Church, several musical groups in practicing and performing, and a summer-long book club at Crown College. As a tutor of student athletes at Indiana University, I tutored students from all walks of life. I began by tutoring Biology and Spanish but the need for tutors in English, Writing, Chemistry and Statistics soon arose and I stepped up to fill those positions. Using previous knowledge from AP classes in high school, as well as recent knowledge gained from my classes, I was able to successfully convey new information in easy to understand and applicable terms to these students. My teaching style is to listen to what the person needs help with, and then to ask them what they already know about the subject. Next, I will show him or her to solve the problem, then ask him or her to try it himself or herself. If he or she has any questions, I will answer them. However, I think that it is best for the person to learn how to solve the problems with assistance from myself, but not to do all the work myself. Ultimately, I want the person to rely on his or her own knowledge in order to become more independent; I am only there to encourage and make any needed corrections.
