My comments on tutoring Writing : I taught writing throughout my career. I write daily on my blog and have published a book.

I have worked with children and teens all my life. I was a camp counselor at a YMCA camp for 6 summers in my teens and early 20s. I taught 5th grade my first year (class of 36 students!) and then taught 3rd grade for a year, 2nd grade for three years, and 4th grade for three years--all in public schools. Then I taught English at the middle school level for four years in a private school. After that I subbed and tutored for a year until I was hired to teach in a K-8 building at the 8th grade level. I taught there for nearly 20 years before I retired, teaching science, pre-algebra, and communication arts (English, reading, vocabulary, writing, grammar, and spelling.) While in that position, I was the sponsor of the science fair, building-wide, for nearly ten years. Since retirement, I have subbed, tutored, have written and published a book, and am writing a daily blog.

Writing is one of my top subjects!

I am a huge supporter students tutoring students. I have found that working with students helps to take down a barrier between the tutor and tutee. Students are more comfortable to work with peers than an authority. My first priority is to listen, listen to what the tutee is looking to get out of the experience. Each student's needs are different and you have to plan around them. When I am tutoring I strive to make the tutee vocal. I like to allow students to think for themselves and see how they approach the challenge. I am there to guide their thinking process and strengthen their knowledge not lecture to them.

I have a PhD in Spanish and Portuguese from a well-known university in the U.S. I have about 20 years of experience teaching Spanish and Portuguese on the college level. This includes elementary and intermediate levels, conversation, composition, literature, culture, film and medical Spanish. I also enjoy tutoring younger students. I try to follow the model of my physics advisor, who has an excellent ability to figure out how a student learns best, then adapt his teaching and explanations accordingly.
