I am a College Student working towards getting a Secondary Education Teaching degree in Biology and Chemistry. I want to eventually go on and teach at the University level. I am planning on going to the University of Utah and want to get a doctorates in Biology or Biochemistry. I have spent two years in the great land of Russia. I love the country and all the people. I have a Masters degree in Chemistry from Portland State University. I have cumulative 10+ years of work experience in diverse academic and research positions in universities and pharmaceutical companies in India and United States. I find breaking down complex scientific ideas into bite-sized chunks to be extremely rewarding, especially when I see the smiles on the faces of my students when they make attain a new level of understanding. My teaching style is flexible depending upon the needs of my student(s). Some students have disabilities that make drilling or repetition styles of teaching and tutoring difficult and tiresome, while other thrive on it. Others need hands on learning opportunities and problems to work through on their own. Regardless of the student’s need, I am a tenacious teacher. While pursuing my own studies in college, I realized that I not only love learning but that I love to increase learning in others as well. Because of this, I spent many hours throughout college volunteering to tutor calculus and chemistry students. During my last two years of college, I worked as a chemistry teaching assistant, a position that allowed me to teach chemistry to groups of 25 college students. I like to use an interactive teaching style in which there is lots of discussion between teacher and student. This provides immediate feedback on the student's understanding, enabling me to adapt the teaching session to provide the most benefit. I love biology and teach with enthusiasm. I believe all students can learn and perform well if they are given the opportunity to become interested, to ask questions without fear, and get clear explanations in multiple formats until they understand. I also feel poor grades are often due to poor testing skills rather than lack of knowledge. This is easily fixed with practice and opportunity to develop confidence in your abilities, at which point testing becomes fun rather than frightening.
