I have a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education with a minor in ESL (English as a Second Language) teaching. Throughout my educational experience, I had many opportunities for tutoring students one-on-one in a variety of subjects. I’ve tutored a broad spectrum of students, from those who were struggling and falling behind, to some who were excelling and who simply needed help being motivated. I once had an Israeli student who knew almost no English when the school year began, and I tutored her every day in oral language and reading instruction. A Little Bit About Me...

I recently graduated from Brigham Young University in April 2011. I am a graduate in Communications can help in English, Writing, Editing but also took AP Calculus and AP Statistics and passed both tests. I love math but feel that communicating through writing is very important. During the last two years I have worked at an Elementary School as Para Professional tutoring children in Math and Reading both in small groups and one-on-one. I love helping children learn!
Building a good relationship with a child is key to helping them learn. When good relationships are developed children can then trust the teacher or tutor to help them in whatever way possible. This relationship builds a good emotional bank account and children will do hard things when asked. I know that all children can learn. I have seen it while working with the wonderful children at the school I worked at.

I've never met a "stupid" student. I see all people as capable, as long as they are willing. I find it easy to get a student interested in a subject when they have usually been bored in class. I easily create metaphors and practical examples for application of the subject at hand so the student can personalize their studies. Once a student sees how the subject "fits" in their life, their interest level often changes.
With a Master's degree in counseling, I have had various experience working with youth on a clinical level. Before going into counseling I was on track to become a high school math teacher. Teaching is a gift from the student to the teacher. The student is giving their time and attention to the teacher in hopes that they will increase in understanding, ability, or skill. This is a time where the students is relaxed and open to learning new ideas. There is not pressure to learn, but an excitement to succeed. All students can learn, given the proper instruction. Teachers have to pay attention to the learning preferences of the student. Effective instruction identifies strengths to build on and uses them to teacher additional concepts. I prefer sitting at the student's elbow, with the assigned work in between us, focusing on it together. I talk about "it" rather than "you" to avoid making the student self-conscious. Writing can always be improved, and each student has areas of strength and weakness. I try to pick one area that needs the most attention, and focus on it. When there is significant improvement, I move on to the next area of weakness. Pointing out all of a student's mistakes and weaknesses at once drains morale, and that is counterproductive. Working on one area at a time keeps the student from being overwhelmed. I like to have the student read out loud to me, so that we can both see what needs improvement. I also point out what was done correctly to boost confidence. Goals are important, as well as establishing a time frame for achieving them.
