When I begin tutoring a new student, my first objective is for us to get to know each other. The student will not be able to receive very much from me until he/she is comfortable with me. Once they feel that I care, they open up and the learning really begins! I initially try to find what he/she is struggling with,and what strengths and weaknesses are present. I allow the person to ask questions in a fluid, spontaneous, "let's see as we tackle this together" manner. When something is not understood, I try to give analogies, examples that the person can relate to. I also may explain the subject matter in a more simplified, methodical fashion. I believe learning can be made appealing, if you find out how the person operates. After falling into a tutoring situation in 2007 with a High School AP Biology student, I decided that tutoring may be the right thing for me. I was hired the next year by Advanced Learning Center and tutored K-5 Reading and Math for a total of 11 students.
