Turning your weakness into your strength

I have been tutoring for over seven years, starting with my peers in tenth grade. I have tutored a wide range of subjects, from Geometry through Calculus III, from general computer knowledge through utilizing the advanced functions of Microsoft Access. I have tutored people ranging from my peers to people three times my age, to as young as third graders. My motto has evolved into "Helping those who feel they can not be helped"
I help guide the student along, having them discover much of the information in a trial and error fashion. I tend to use the questions they are struggling with the most, making similar examples, then walking them through these problems and breaking down the problems until the student understands the how the process works.

I graduated high school in 2003 as the valedictorian of my class. I maintained my high level of academics in college but didn't know what I wanted to do for a career. I graduated in 2007 with my business degree and moved to NC. I worked for a mental health agency helping children in broken homes with school work and being a positive male role model as well as taking pre reqs to return to school for my masters degree in physical therapy. I have always believed that a good teacher is the best tool to help students learn. Having personal experience with learning disabilities, I do not think that they prevent anyone from learning; rather, they provide students with a better understanding of themselves. Realizing that we all learn differently, I believe that teaching should incorporate multiple methods of presentation. I think that demonstrations and examples, which relate to everyday life, are two of the best methods when learning a new concept. I have experience with children and adults with ADHD and Asperger’s Syndrome, and found they perform best when interested. As a patient and understanding person, I adapt my teaching style to reflect the needs of each student.
As a motivated person, I attended UNCG as an undergraduate and graduate student while working full time. I have received both a BS and MS in Biochemi ... read more

Teaching and working with young individuals over the course of my education has been particularly memorable. I have taught and tutored a wide array of students from Ivy league bound seniors to 4 year olds with autism. I am very open-minded and love helping others to achieve their goals and strive for excellence.
As a graduate of the University of Virginia, I was very dedicated to learning as much as possible. I double majored in Government and Sociology, yet was able to take numerous courses in other areas as well. After earning my undergraduate degree, I decided to pursue graduate school immediately. I was offered Graduate Teaching Assistantships at the University of North Carolina Charlotte. This experience was wonderful because I not only could learn in my master's level courses, but also introduce undergraduate students into the field that I was passionate about.

I have worked with children since I was 13. I have worked in settings where I was a daycare worker, a nanny, and a substitute teacher. I believe that every child has thier own unique way of learning even though there may be a mainstream way of teaching.
