I am patient yet firm. I expect students to be accountable for their own success; I want my students to become self-sufficient. With proper guidance and encouragement most students will succeed if not excel.
I taught high school English for three years. My students ranged from far below basic to advanced. My students consistently showed improvement in their standardized test scores and over 95% of my students passed the course. Also, Over 95% of my sophomore passed the CAHSEE. In addition to my high school experience, I have been tutoring adult learners for the past three years, becoming the program manager two years ago. My philosophy of teaching is to train the student to think like a scientist and/or mathematician. It is not just about getting the right answer but rather understanding the fundamental principals of a subject. This enables the student to try previously unseen problems and succeed. I also believe in varying the techniques used. If a student has trouble with their teacher or text books approach, a different method should be explored. Imparting true understanding is a satisfying experience that I always aim for.

I graduated from Duke University in 2009 with a triple-major in Biomedical Engineering, Economics, and Mathematics. I have tutored in Economics and spent four years mentoring middle-schools students in Engineering as a Techtronics Fellow.
I have never been someone who "just gets it" when it comes to math or science, and so I understand more than many people who pursued degrees in these subjects just how puzzling they can be. Math seems like it is filled with "tricks" that seem impossible to know unless you were born with some innate gift. When I teach, I seek to show, step-by-step. how to think about a problem as more than a set of symbols on paper.
