A Little Bit About Me...

I like to teach using different strategies and methods, because I know all the students in the classroom are not going to learn the same way. I feel it is best to fully understand my content and standards. Then create lessons to teach the students in a way they will learn the material best for them. I teach using various methods: hands-on, kinesthetic, real life learning, music, incorporating other contents and likes, while still creating a routine for structure. My style changes based on my students needs.
I have completed a MAST (Mathematics as Strategic Teaching) Seminar. I approach teaching and tutoring as an exercise in problem solving. It requires assessment of the student's background, previously mastered skills, learning style, and engagement with the content. I believe that anyone can be taught anything; the key is developing an engaged, encouraged student with the fundamental knowledge to grasp the concepts at hand. Sometimes this requires remediation of specific skills. Other times, a student needs to understand the big picture so concepts can take root. Some students may require a visual demonstration while others master concepts best by diving head first into the content and asking questions when they arrive at a sticking point. I come from a family of teachers and now I too would like to join this profession. I worked as a volunteer teacher for one year, teaching music to grades K-8 and mathematics to students in fourth grade. I have two and a half years of experience as an assistant teacher to Kindergarteners, second grade students, and adult ESL students at a University level. I tutored these ESL students also for two and a half years. Currently, I work as a part-time ESOL instructor with the YWCA, teaching and tutoring adults from a variety of Countries and educational backgrounds. In between obtaining my BA in political science and English from the University of Mississippi in 2009 and returning to school for chemical engineering I spent a year and a half working with student governments on college campuses as a political consultant for a public policy organization. I learned to love working with students through this experience, so when I returned to school it seemed natural to become an academic tutor.
