A Little Bit About Me...

I have completed a MAST (Mathematics as Strategic Teaching) Seminar. I have completed training over engaging difficult students and I have also learned more innovative techniques in which to use when engaging students who are trying to achieve more challenging skills. I designed a program called Math Mates, which was an after school intervention program for students who needed more hands on time for learning, I opened the program up for all students but set aside certain days when specific students were invited so we could use more hands on manipulative and we worked on the different content standards.

I try a variety of approaches to see what works with each student. If you have 25 students in a class, you can have 25 different learning styles. I believe a lot in hands-on and learning from others. Questions are always welcome. I continually do course work to keep up on new approaches. Being teachable is key. I have seen students I work with have success. These students range from the gifted to the so-called difficult child. I love all types and really get a joy out of seeing them succeed.

When I become a professor, I am going to make sure that in each and every student I encounter that I instill the belief that no matter what background they have, all of their professional goals are possible. I come from a family with very little formal education, and I have been able through hard work and dilligence progress through all degree programs very well. I had a handful of professors in college that took a stance of sticking to your goals and not letting a few obstacles hinder your progress. I have four years of teaching experience at graduate school. I was pursuing my Ph.D. at the University of Toledo for two years before I got a job. I graduated from University of California, Davis with a master degree in chemistry in two years. At both schools, I worked as a teaching assistant. The students I taught are mainly from life science, pharmacy and chemistry. The teaching job usually includes three sections. 1) Recitation. 2) Lab. 3) Office hour. I conducted classes for new employees and managers and used my writing skills to provide training and testing materials.
