I taught elementary school in the 4-J School District. I later returned to graduate school at Portland State University for an MA to teach English as a Second Language and taught ESL to immigrants at Lane Community College. While living in Montana for a few years, I taught phonics, reading, and math with small groups of children in the Title One program in the Eureka Public Schools. Most recently I taught English to international students at the American English Institute at the University of Oregon. I am very patient, encouraging, and supportive. My teaching style is probably best suited to high school and college students. Although I successfully helped my own 3 children through their elementary school, high school and college years, my tutoring experience has been with older students. My wife is a Montessori trained teacher so I have absorbed that method for tutoring. Each student must be viewed as an individual to define the areas of weakness and fill them in. It is only when the student understands the basics of a subject that they can build a future in it.
