I've babysat since I was twelve and for the past few years I've worked as a nanny. It's not exactly what you would expect for a tutor but I've been offering homework help in those areas for many years.

As an Adult Education teacher I taught learners from High School age through 70 year-olds. I taught office occupations; ESL; and GED, ABS, HS diploma and citizenship. I developed knowledge and skills in many content areas and in the management of students. I have taught post-graduate classes in computer applications for different content areas, reading and writing for elementary students, discipline, character education, and working with ELLs.
I am patient, have a good sense of humor, and strive to help students achieve to their ability. I have great faith in children's ability to develop proficiency in any content as long as they have adequate support. One size does not fit all in education and I use differentiation and different teaching modalities, with a lot of realia and manipulatives, to meet the students' learning styles and preferences, and the content area. As a high school teacher for 13 years, I have had a profound impact on the academic and personal success of a great majority of my students. I believe that education should be tailored to the needs, abilities, and learning styles of each student. I believe in consistent positive reinforcement and praise, and in tracking and measuring skills so that students have evidence of their progress. I hope to help students discover the intrinsic rewards of learning, but respect the joy and relief students feel when their goal is passing a difficult subject for promotion.
As a lifelong learner, I'm always motivated by students who have a curiosity for improving their own skills. I have a BA in liberal arts from Vassar College and a MS in Education from Queens College, which I earned through the full-time work/part-time study New York City Teaching Fellowship. I am fluent in Spanish, conversant in Japanese and French, and am always excited about learning more languages. As a special education teacher, I've worked with large classro ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My first tutoring experience actually began when I was a high school senior and tutored ESL students at South High School. Since then I have worked in a summer program tutoring elementary ESL students, gone on to graduate with degrees in English and Environmental Studies, and most recently, worked as an Americorps member at Andersen Elementary and Open in Minneapolis. My primary role at Andersen was tutoring elementary students (mostly 5th grade) in math and reading. I also have some experience in teaching ecology at a couple of environmental learning centers. Although my degrees are in English and Environmental Studies, I am also quite comfortable with math up through the 8th grade level.
I think one of my greatest strengths as a tutor is my patience with students. I am very attentive to the frustrations that students sometimes undergo and I continue to work with students until th ... read more

More About This Tutor...

During my undergrad studies, I began tutoring with children (usually 1-2 at a time) from pre-school age with phonics and sight reading until the present time with reading, writing, math, science and history. I have also worked in a private girls school as an After School Study Hall teacher for Grades 5-8 and presently I am a Substitute teacher for Grades K-6 in a self-contained classroom.
I enjoy teaching children of all ages. Being a tutor and substitute teacher has provided me the opportunity to see so much growth and potential that children have. I believe everyone has opportunity to do their best and I always stay positive to encourage them to try. If a child is about to give up trying, I encourage them to take a short break, then try again. I tell them, "practice makes perfect." Never give up before you try something new.
