I have taught middle school history in Santa Fe, led and organized dance competitions for middle school students in west Philadelphia, and spent a year teaching English as a second language in Taiwan for students grades 2-6. What I have found works effectively is to lead the student through the problem with as little intervention as possible. The problem the student usually has with the particular topic is usually a slight misunderstanding of background material needed to answer the question.
