Journalism is one of my top subjects!

Over the past 20 years, I have taught Italian to students of all ages and backgrounds. I have a Bachelor's degree in Italian and a secondary teaching credential from San Francisco State University. I love to help students gain an understanding of Italian grammar from an English-speaking point of view, or improve conversational ability for an upcoming trip. I am expert in English grammar as well, and have been published multiple times in local magazines, so I can help students of English with all grammar and writing questions.
I have a Bachelor's Degree and Single Subject Secondary credential in Italian. I have tutored hundreds of students, from beginners to advanced, over the past 15 years. At Loyola University, as director of the Writing Lab, I used peer tutoring and computers to assist students in the composition classes. I developed a love for tutoring and remediation -- for the student who needs one-on-one instruction. I allow the student to be successful. Every lesson must end in success and praise. It also helps that I have a good sense of humor and a knack for discovering each student's personal interests and melding those into the lessons. It's imperative instruction be individualized, positive and patient.
After I got my BA and Illinois secondary school certification, I pursued my MFA in Playwriting at the University of Utah. I forged a career as a writer and journalist. My liberal education in history and the arts deeply benefited me. All students can learn, but in different ways. I, for one, learn best by watching how something is done. I can read about it, or hear a lecture about it, but seeing it helps me understand the subject. This type of teaching would be done with movies, drawing or acting out the situation. In my teaching, I try to use all methods available to me to help the students learn and to use their creativity. I especially try to get students to work in groups and to share their work with each other. I find that pier groups provide the best help in understanding the subject matter. The classroom should be a learning place of activities and fun.

I worked with students from the age of eight to eighteen. Each age group provided its own set of challenges and opportunities to strengthen my experience as a tutor. I worked with children in small groups or one-on-one, based on the child's learning style. I encouraged the children to set their academic goals high and use the support from their peers to help them achieve their goals. I have no one set teaching style, I get to know each student's learning style so that they can benefit the most from the tutoring session. Through patience, respect and dedication, I work with students so that they can achieve their goals.

While under pressure, I always maintain a positive attitude. I like to have a guide for the daily work and have specific goals every day. However, when someone is interested in a different subject, I like to explore that topic. I think it is very important to keep students alert and motivated, so I like to explore all types of learning expericences. For example, I enjoy working with the special education children, getting them to stretch and walk outside. I like to play music to them and get them to sing along. I also enjoy getting these children to create art and express themselves in short sentences, writing to match their abilties.

It truly depends on the student and the subject. I try to adapt my teaching style to what the student needs. If one approach is not working, then we can work together to find an approach that does. I believe that it is important for the student to be able to relate to the teacher and it is the teachers job to create that connection.
