My comments on tutoring Chess : Decent chess player

Very patient. Usually I will explain the concept, present a practice problem, and double check to make sure he or she understands how to do it. But if possible, I will teach differently in the most effective way.
I have just finished junior year of high school and will be a senior this fall. Throughout my life I have always been especially good at math. I never fail to get an A in math every year. In 10th grade I decided to skip Pre-Calculus from Algebra 2 to AP Calculus BC when I enter 11th grade. Interestingly, I still found AP Calculus BC to be relatively easy. I am the vice president of a tutor club at La Costa Canyon High School. I teach students after school all subjects. I also tutored students outside of school. During my junior year I tutored a girl in Pre-Algebra who did not understand how graphs work. I also tutored a high-schooler in Pre-Calculus two weeks ag ... read more

I believe each student is different and as such, each should be handled differently. My more than six years of tutoring experience provided me extensive background on students characters and approaches in better presenting the subject matter. At the end of the day, it is important that the student has learned and is ready in tackling subject topics.
Since I graduated with a BS in Environmental Science, I had been a high-school tutor for more than 6 years helping students in the subjects of Math and Science, specifically, Algebra, Geometry, Physics, and Biology. I handled, on the average, 8 students daily - some in groups while others individually. I have learned to understand each student's needs and characters and the approaches in dealing with them. I now have a Masters Degree in Accountancy and believe in the importance of education in one's life. I would like to continue helpi ... read more

I finished my lower division coursework at a california community college (AHC) and earned a total of six associate degrees. While at the community college, I administered practice test for students in MESA in mathematics (Calculus 1,2,3, and 4) while also working the maximum of 20 hours a week in the campus math lab (walk-in tutoring). Furthermore, I attended and graduated from UCLA with a bachelor's degree in physics and a minor in mathematics and finished the necessary coursework to apply to all medical school programs in to the country. I tutored for side money while attending UCLA. Currently, I'm a graduate student at SDSU. I'm two courses and a Master's thesis away from receiving my Master's degree in Physics.

I retired last year (2008) after 30 years as a Public Servant (law enforcement) with the City of San Diego. I have also retired from the Naval Reserve as a Master-At-Arms Chief in 2006. I have taught, counseled and mentored individuals throughout my career. I initially studied Physics and Math at college level and changed major after employment with the city. I attained my BS degree in Criminal Justice. My future plan is to transition to a teaching profession and teach a subject I love most, and that is Math.
I love teaching young minds and inspire them to learn Math. My goal is to show the value of doing math problems. Practice, Practice, Practice, the more math problems done, the more he/she will comprehend. I will approach Math problems as an enjoyable challenge that can easily be overcome.

I have been a straight-A student my entire life and I recently graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a 4.0 GPA. I earned my B.S. in Physics (Astronomy emphasis) with a minor in Applied Mathematics. Though my expertise lies in mathematics and the sciences, I am also knowledgeable in topics ranging from history to English grammar and composition. Much of my academic success is due to my ability to prepare for exams. I scored a 32 on the ACT, as well as perfect scores of 800 on the SAT2 Writing and GRE Mathematics exams. I gained teaching-related experience during my year as an Instructional Assistant, in which I assisted students with math, science, English, and GED exam preparation. At the college level, I spent 2.5 years tutoring in physics, math, and astronomy, as well as a semester in a college-level general physics class working as a teaching assistant.

Most people have a fear of math, and I feel that everyone is capable of learning the material. It depends on the amount of time that one dedicates that will determine whether they will understand the material. My approach to teaching is to go step by step and not cutting any corners. I teach my students to take the time to go through every step to condition them into doing it correctly. My method uses lots of visuals and examples. followed by allowing the student to try on their own once they have practiced enough. I try to simulate test situations to make them feel more comfortable for the test.
During my college education I worked for a high school as a teaching assistant. At this school I was able to teach and help students with their various assignments from various subjects. A Little Bit About Me...

I have been working in the education field since my senior year of high school, where I discovered my passion in a ROP class. Since then I have earned my elementary teaching credential as well as my single subject biology and geoscientific credential and a GATE certification from UCSD extension. With this wide range of certification and my extensive experience teaching in different environments I know that I am the right person to tutor students who may be struggling in an academic area. I have worked in schools, homes, after school programs, and summer camps, which has given me a wide variety of teaching techniques that I can implement in my tutoring.

I began teaching electronics, weapons safety, CPR, missile assembly and handling, and weapons handling certification in the military. My style is one of facilitation. Facilitating requires you to encourage the student to use their own understanding as much as possible. I usually use a multiplicity of approaches to help the student better understand the big picture and keep their perspective. I encourage the student to look at the problem with a logical perspective and estimate of what is happening in general terms as a reference point for when they are making their calculations. I also try to get the student to see where the text book discusses the problem, so that when I am not there, they can find the information on their own.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a synthetic Organic Chemist with over 7 years of industrial experience with Pfizer Inc. During this time period I routinely shared research progress with my peers and helped educate them on new reactions, instrumentation, techniques and methodology. During my studies at Kalamazoo College, I successfully completed some coursework in Education and have always wanted to pursue a career in Teaching/Tutoring. My Liberal Arts background encouraged a well-rounded education that included English, Spanish, History, Science, Mathematics, and the Arts.
