My comments on tutoring Chess : Decent chess player

I have just finished junior year of high school and will be a senior this fall. Throughout my life I have always been especially good at math. I never fail to get an A in math every year. In 10th grade I decided to skip Pre-Calculus from Algebra 2 to AP Calculus BC when I enter 11th grade. Interestingly, I still found AP Calculus BC to be relatively easy. I am the vice president of a tutor club at La Costa Canyon High School. I teach students after school all subjects. I also tutored students outside of school. During my junior year I tutored a girl in Pre-Algebra who did not understand how graphs work. I also tutored a high-schooler in Pre-Calculus two weeks ago who had a final in two days. I came to his house and tutored him for a total of 15 hours (he needed lots of help) in those two days.
Very patient. Usually I will explain the concept, present a practice problem, ... read more

I began teaching electronics, weapons safety, CPR, missile assembly and handling, and weapons handling certification in the military. My style is one of facilitation. Facilitating requires you to encourage the student to use their own understanding as much as possible. I usually use a multiplicity of approaches to help the student better understand the big picture and keep their perspective. I encourage the student to look at the problem with a logical perspective and estimate of what is happening in general terms as a reference point for when they are making their calculations. I also try to get the student to see where the text book discusses the problem, so that when I am not there, they can find the information on their own.

I believe each student is different and as such, each should be handled differently. My more than six years of tutoring experience provided me extensive background on students characters and approaches in better presenting the subject matter. At the end of the day, it is important that the student has learned and is ready in tackling subject topics.
Since I graduated with a BS in Environmental Science, I had been a high-school tutor for more than 6 years helping students in the subjects of Math and Science, specifically, Algebra, Geometry, Physics, and Biology. I handled, on the average, 8 students daily - some in groups while others individually. I have learned to understand each student's needs and characters and the approaches in dealing with them. I now have a Masters Degree in Accountancy and believe in the importance of education in one's life. I would like to continue helpi ... read more

While at the community college, I administered practice test for students in MESA in mathematics (Calculus 1,2,3, and 4) while also working the maximum of 20 hours a week in the campus math lab (walk-in tutoring). Furthermore, I attended and graduated from UCLA with a bachelor's degree in physics and a minor in mathematics and finished the necessary coursework to apply to all medical school programs in to the country. A Little Bit About Me...

As an alumnus of the University of Oxford and of Duke University, I know what it takes to get a good education and to be a proficient student. I am available to tutor Spanish, writing, and the LSAT, scoring a 5 on the Spanish Language AP examination, a 4 on the Spanish Literature AP examination, and a 5 on the English Literature examination; I also received a 177 out of a possible 180 on the LSAT; finally, I received a 2300 out of a possible 2400 on the SAT, including perfect 800s on the verbal and writing portions of that test. I have two years' experience as an editor and a year's experience as a tutor.
The essence of my teaching style is adaptation. While there are a few principles which any student can use to become a more effective learner, the implementation of these principles must be modified to meet the particular student's needs. Learning a language, writing, and standard ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I love teaching young minds and inspire them to learn Math. My goal is to show the value of doing math problems. Practice, Practice, Practice, the more math problems done, the more he/she will comprehend. I will approach Math problems as an enjoyable challenge that can easily be overcome.
I retired last year (2008) after 30 years as a Public Servant (law enforcement) with the City of San Diego. I have also retired from the Naval Reserve as a Master-At-Arms Chief in 2006. I have taught, counseled and mentored individuals throughout my career. I initially studied Physics and Math at college level and changed major after employment with the city. I attained my BS degree in Criminal Justice. My future plan is to transition to a teaching profession and teach a subject I love most, and that is Math.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been a straight-A student my entire life and I recently graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a 4.0 GPA. I earned my B.S. in Physics (Astronomy emphasis) with a minor in Applied Mathematics. Though my expertise lies in mathematics and the sciences, I am also knowledgeable in topics ranging from history to English grammar and composition. Much of my academic success is due to my ability to prepare for exams. I scored a 32 on the ACT, as well as perfect scores of 800 on the SAT2 Writing and GRE Mathematics exams. I gained teaching-related experience during my year as an Instructional Assistant, in which I assisted students with math, science, English, and GED exam preparation. At the college level, I spent 2.5 years tutoring in physics, math, and astronomy, as well as a semester in a college-level general physics class working as a teaching assistant.

A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated from University of California Riverside and received my bachelor's degree in Mathematics. Not only I gain more understanding in Math, I also spent most of my time with my fellow classmates helping each other for our Math assignments in college. During the spring 2010, I tutored one student who is struggling in Algebra 1 and helped her pass the class.
I love Math, and I would love to have the opportunity to teach children and adults especially students from k-12th grade who are struggling in Math. My teaching style would be to teach Math as simple and understandable as possible. I would also make my teaching style to be fun but my priority is to tutor students to be successful in their education.

Learning is cultivated when a child’s best effort makes them successful and mistakes are seen as stepping stones towards a goal. Teachers must set high expectations for their students as well as inspire students to have high expectations of themselves. For teachers, a positive attitude is a must. Constructivist teachers engage students in experiences that bring understanding to students, rather than share their own understandings. I firmly believe that the most effective way to educate students to their highest levels, they must participate in hands-on activities which promote active involvement and problem solving. Higher order thinking skills and the ability to think critically is the key to developing thriving members of society.
