A Little Bit About Me...

During my time at Hocking Technical College, I was taking alot of biology related classes such as Botany, Ohio Trees, Aquatic Ecology and many other related classes. I was a tutor for 1 year, teaching students about learining there trees by showing them out in the field and also teaching them latin names for these specific trees. In addition, I tutored students in Aquatic Ecology and used mnemonic devices to aid in memorization of these concepts. While at Appalachian State Universtiy, I would often organize study groups and review concepts regarding geography skills in lab and also in the lecture. A Little Bit About Me...

I have loved teaching and still keep in touch with many of my former students. In fact, I have taught many of their children! I seem to end up helping students with more than just their homework. I have always had a talent for understanding that not everyone "gets it the first time." I had much trouble with science myself. When I was responsible for hiring teachers, I usually wasn't a fan of those with 4.0 averages. I was afraid they wouldn't have the patience to answer the same question 10 times! I always try many methods (visual, auditory, tactile) until we find the right one for my students. I consider it my personal challenge to be able to get that "aha" out of a young person.

A Little Bit About Me...

I always try to start from "where the student is" and build on from starting point. I believe in positive reinforcement and that anything worth having in life requires consistent effort. I frequently am told after a day of subbing, "Mr. Burns, you are the greatest sub ever!" My wife and I also still perform as musicians in local restaurants, including several Mexican restaurants where we perform many songs in Spanish.
I taught Middle School band for 30 years in the public schools, followed by 9 years part-time at the respected Old Trail School in Bath, OH. My bands at Bolich Middle School in Cuyahoga Falls, OH received many "Outstanding" ratings at O.M.E.A. contests. I have also substituted in several local school districts for a wide variety of subjects, including Spanish and French. I have also tutored Spanish privately, and given private lessons on piano and flute.

More About This Tutor...

I graduated from college with certification to teach grades 1-12. Do to the job market at that time, I was unable to get a full time teaching job. I substituted and then tutored for 2 years. I then worked various jobs working with the public. Although much of work experience is not in the teaching field, I have worked with people in many ways to reach their full potential and can relate to them on a level that they will comprehend.
I believe in using a multi- modality approach to teaching. The more senses involved, the more likely one will remember. I also believe in trying to make material needed to learn to seem approachable or pertinent in their lives.(No matter the age) Anyone can learn if it is presented in a way that makes it exciting and fun. You must let them give a sense of accomplishment and success.
