Every student I have consistently tutored over the years, there has been improvement in scores. As long as I have the material that is needed for tutoring prior to the tutor session, the session should be very effective in improving grades and most importantly understanding.

My approach to teaching students mathematics is to first ensure they understand the basics. In my experience, students typically have trouble learning new material because they have not mastered the previous material, which is typically a prerequisite to understanding the new material. I believe with enough time spent on the basics, any student can learn more advanced mathematical concepts. Once I feel their understanding of the previous material is strong, I walk them through example problems and then have them solve increasingly difficult problems on their own. Children can become unfocused very easily. When children are distracted it may be very difficult to get them focused. Taking your time and making sure they refocus, can actually save time. During my studies at SUNY Buffalo I tutored in Regents Math which I also took when I was in high school. In Virginia Tech I was a Graduate Research Assistant. I ran Aerospace Engineering labs, assigning work to undergraduate students which I graded. I was available for multiple hours per week assisting students in their homework and lab reports. Since then I have been a math tutor in calculus. Engineering requires a solid understanding of math from the basics such as algebra and geometry to more difficult calculus and linear algebra.
