I am an interactive teacher, and I believe in step by step instructions when needed. Most importantly, I believe in the power of clear thinking combined with creative thinking. My degree is in secondary education with a minor in philosophy and a major in English. I taught English for 40 years and am now recently retired. I taught English overseas while in the US Peace Corps, 1969-71. I taught English at MATC for two years. Most of my career was at the high school level teaching all types of classes, such as literature, Shakespeare, creative writing, reading, plays and drama, speech, etc. after retirement, I became a writing facilitator for elementary teachers. I worked with grades 1-8 teaching the six traits of writing. I have also tutored several students.

I believe that a child cannot fully come to comprehend subject matter without having a chance to be immersed in it first. This philosophy lends to the hands-on, question-oriented form of teaching that I so firmly stand by. I realize that different people employ different strategies in coming to learn new material and I will adjust the way I teach as best I can in order to accommodate each and every individual detail. Much the same as the famous social psychologist Lev Vygotsky emphasized the zone of proximal development, I believe that education should not be approached from the standpoint of "teaching to the test" as much as it deserves to be about aiding a child in coming up with creative alternatives in an effort to master the concept in question and develop an intrinsic motivation to actually want to learn. I have formally tutored with Madison College on two occasions lasting a year. I was also Tutoring throughout my time at Edgewood on a drop in basis with any students that came to the math department and could not reach a professor. I have a BS in Mathematics and doing math at all levels is fun for me. I enjoy helping students work through tough problems by allowing them to make mistakes and then rework the problem a couple of times the correct way. Since this is my area of expertise, I am able to come up with examples on the fly that will target the areas most troublesome to the student. Mathematics is a field that requires repetition but making that repetition as interesting as possible is a fun challenge.
