A Little Bit About Me...

As a teacher for six years and a physical therapy aide for one, I believe I have very good teaching skills. Not only did I have to teach students music and math, subjects I know students are uncomfortable with, I had to teach and motivate patients to do exercises while they were in pain. I have had many years of experience tutoring and teaching students in Kindergarten through 12th grade computers, math, English and reading. I also have taught these same grades many guitar, percussion and voice lessons. I am classically trained in the voice area and I have a math minor.
I am able to teach children of all ages and also am able to tailor my teaching style to the age I am teaching. Communication has always been an interest of mine so I pursued a journalism degree and spent many hours in education to be an adept communicator through the written word. I also enjoy the person-to-person communication that is involved with the journalism profession. I have expanded my skills and knowledge through pursuing a creative arts career, as well. Before going to college, I formed the Oscoda County Youth Association with the goal of creating an organization that operated in the interests of the youth of the community. I have dedicated my professional life to helping students and young people achieve their potential. In my experience, often times a student’s ability to learn is tied in with their trust of and rapport with the person teaching them. I feel it is important to allow the student to go at his or her “own pace” and not create a frustrating environment where they may feel too pressured. Although the parents may feel frustrated at this point, it is helpful to get their support and encouragement during the tutoring process. So, ideally, it is important to first create a good learning environment followed by a clear understanding of the subject problem areas (establishing a “baseline”) and then setting up a plan for overcoming those problem areas.

A Little Bit About Me...

My style of teaching is to first get the student to understand the basics that are needed as a foundation. For example, my friend was having trouble completing accounting homework and I soon realized that it was because he had not memorized the basic equations; i.e., "assets - liabilities = owner's equity," and "beginning inventory + purchases - ending inventory = cost of goods sold." Just about impossible to advance without the basics.
At Hartnell College I tutured math and economics. Recently I tutored a co-worker who was taking a college Accounting class and he appreciated it and said that I was very helpful. I have a Bachelor's degree in accounting and many years of accounting experience. I also have knowledge of computer programming with html, css, javascript, php, and mysql.
