I began my career in education in 1993 as an Instructional Aide. That experience cemented my desire to be a teacher. Since that time I have devoted myself to getting the education necessary for that dream to come true.I now have a Bachelor's in English, and a Master's in Education. While attending school I tutored after-school students and substituted whenever possible. Concurrent with my Master's studies I was attending the teacher training program. I hold an Institutional Recommendation for Credential. My Master's degree has an endorsement for teaching SEI (Sheltered English Immersion), and I hold a certificate for teaching TESL. Teaching styles are as diverse as students in the classroom. Given that fact, differentiated instruction is necessary because no two students learn alike. I look at each student as an individual. I think it is important to determine which teaching style works for that person. I would use this information to choose the best method for each student. I think it is important to make learning fun at every age. Education should not be a chore but something to embrace. It would be one of my goals to limit fears or mental blocks that a student may have because they think they can't do it. I would focus on each students potential for success. I have worked with children age 0 to 17 over the years. I tutored my daughters friends when she was in High School in History and some English especially literacy. My primary experience is with preschoolers but I have also been a day camp counselor for 3rd graders, a Girl scout Cadette leader and volunteered at the teen center.

I begin teaching students after assessing their needs and experiences. My students are active learners as I instruct with games, music, and art. Students are engaged because the material I use relates to their level of development and life experiences. When students are engaged learning is enjoyable. Positive behavior supports include appropriate praise for specific tasks and affirmation for accomplishments. It is rewarding teaching children, observing their academic growth, and being a part of their discoveries in learning. With a BA in Liberal studies my excellent writing skills complimented the thesis I wrote as a Masters of Science in Education student, and I grew as a teacher of reading when I researched strategies that would increase the academic success of a struggling first grade student learning to read. Everyone has style of teaching that is unique. Mine is at first appearance very laid back, but on closer inspection is very powerful and extremely effective in the long run. My strategy as a teacher is to study and assess a student first, then to develop a plan with the student regarding how we should approach a task or problem. I am big on having students develop a stronger internal locus of control, empowering them to feel capable to tackle anything that they might encounter with or without the help of others. I first started teaching in 2003 as a substitute to supplement the income from my guiding business during the slower portion of the year. After showing that I was very capable in the classroom and could quickly develop a strong rapport with coworkers and students, I was hired for the year when another teacher left unexpectedly.
