It’s really up to the student. Everyone learns differently and wants a different kind of teaching style to be used with them. I do think the most helpful dynamic is where a student asks questions and uses me as a tool to fill in the gaps of their own learning. Grabbing a language by the horns and only learning what makes you curious is a great strategy. Other students need more structure and direction at the start and that is fine as well. It is also important to make sure that what they know is correct and that they are not confused or misunderstanding the material. After which, getting to know the individual style of learning for each student will insure that time is used efficiently and that the student is understanding and retaining the material being taught.
