I like to combine both direct instruction and hands-on activities when teaching. A Little Bit About Me...

Although my BS degree is in Computer Science, I have taken (and passed!) courses in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Computer Engineering - which means I have learned a lot of advanced math. My work as a software developer required writing "white papers" to explain and describe our software as well as test documents that would allow a person unfamiliar with our software to sit down and formally test it. All children are students; they can learn. The question is how best do they learn? I have used many differing styles from rote memorization through self-paced self-education. I encourage students to see the wonder and "mystery" (there really isn't any mystery) of Math, regardless of the level, in the real world. To that aid, I try to present real world problems at levels the student can understand. For lower level students, I investigate with them the development of the linear equations involved in setting up a relationship between two factors. A higher level student would solve multiple linear equations. A height vs. time linear relationship then can become quadratic, thus involving sports as an application.
