I have enjoyed the personal gratification of tutoring since high school. Since I was 15 years old, I have shared my knowledge and love of mathematics with people of all ages. I attended Spelman College and Georgia Institute of Technology, where I received my Bachelor of Science in both Mathematics and Mechanical Engineering. I also tutored my peers at these institutions. My goal is to help students understand the foundation and theory behind math concepts, so that they can tackle any math problem with ease and confidence. Confidence is key!

A Little Bit About Me...

I have worked quite a lot with elementary school children, whether it be in or outside of work. I have done independent tutor work, mainly in the fields of Art and Language Arts. In the past I had a long-term job in which I was required to interact with young children, and I did so willingly. For two years in a row, I taught a Beginner's Guitar course for children and the feedback I received was overwhelmingly positive. My comments on tutoring Algebra : Prepared lessons for and taught a high school algebra 1 course for one semester. Worked in an Algebra 1 classroom as a teacher's assistant for one year.

I worked as a tutor in the Math Learning Center at Michigan State University for 3 years, and was also a teaching assistant for a precalculus for a semester while attending MSU. I have a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from Michigan State, and have completed a semester of student teaching and graduate certification courses in teaching mathematics.
I like to use what the student already knows to prompt them forward into discovering how to complete the problem at hand on their own with guidance. I think this help connects the new material to the material the student already knows, which, in turn, will help them remember and understand it better.

I began teaching 16 years . I taught mathematics and Portuguese for children with difficulties in doing homework . I continued to teach for five years or more. Kind and patient tutor for math, science & computing.

Although not degreed in math, science or computers, they were my favorite subjects. More importantly, I am gifted in communicating concepts into terms my students understand and grasp. Repetition doesn't equate to learning, it's a component, it's a way to practice, but it is not how the mind grasps the concept. My comments on tutoring Algebra : A favorite subject.

My method of tutoring is to work with students where they are and add to their skills, to accomplish the final outcome, preferably an "A" or "B." Some students are visual learners and some are informational learners, or some students combine the two. The potential I see in students is what I try to bring out and have them realize they are capable of going a step further, to reach their goal. The importance of education and the students' continuance of same cannot be stressed enough.
I started out tutoring elementary students in basic math and English grammar while I attended college part time in the 1980's.
