I have a BS in Biology and English and am completing a MS in Biology. My degrees focus on Microbiolgy/Molecular Biology and British Literature. I have tutored high school math and college-level Biology in a formal setting. I have also taught Biology at the college level. I enjoy working with students of all ages. I strive to encourage students to develop a love for learning and the ability to learn independently. Each person has a different learning style so I like to allow students to take an active role in designing the method in which they will best learn the material. The best activities require students to take the initiative to meet the demands of the material, but allow them to collaborate with me to solve problems. I act as a consultant to the students, guiding and redirecting their focus and motivation when necessary, but permitting them to create an environment in which they can learn to appreciate the material and cultivate a stronger desire to learn. I try to employ "active learning" with call and response lecturing. I also encourage students to identify how they learn, by noting their own strengths such as linear or circular thinking. I also help them identify how they learn the best and encourage research, research, research as well as using games and multiple approaches to difficult concepts. I've been a college adviser and lecturer for the since August of 2003, so I'm patient, caring, concerned, but able to impart discipline and organization skills.
