Since then, I have taught reading and mathematics to both children with special needs and regular education children at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. As I gained a greater thirst to do more to help children, outside of teaching in the public school setting, I bagan tutoring. Between teacing within the public school and tutoring outside of the public school setting, I gained a great deal of experience when it comes to identifying strategies that cause children to learn and retain what they have learned. My one to one teaching style is tailored to adapt to the students learning style. However, my experience shows that keeping the student active during the learning process promotes a better learning. I use Microsoft Excel during my lessons. I create formulas, graphs, etc. and the Excel spreadsheet and ask the student to enter the data so that he/she can see how things change with different entries. This interactive process increased the student interest, kept them focused and helped them to hold the knowledge in many instances.
Most of my teaching experience is from one to one tutoring. I have tutored over 20 students and always received compliments regarding my reliability, punctuality, style and patience. I have tutored for students with ages raging from 14 to 25 years old and included algebra, geometry, calculus, physics, etc. I worked as an 8th grade math teacher for a Catho ... read more

This requires that I stay aware of the hints that the student is transmitting so that I can present the material in a manner that the student can proclaim "I've got it". I also work with the student to solve problems. Another approach I use is to never answer a question directly. I always ask them questions in a manner that allo ... read more

As you can tell, from all of my degrees, I value education. It is a passion of mine to help explain complex subject matter to students that don't find the subject matter easy. I have found that strong students are very easy to teach. If you give them a problem, they will just work at it until they learn it. Weaker students aren't always weak, sometimes, they may just be different kinds of learners. I think everyone deserves to have access to quality education because a more educated society is a more productive society.
As a non-traditional student, I was able to gain a unique educational experience. I started off earning multiple degrees at a community college, then transferred to Temple to study Actuarial Science. The training I received while preparing for actuarial exams taught me how to think about and solve problems so thoroughly that I was able to teach any subject I learned ... read more

I have learned through my experience that many people have a "math-phobia" This is usually onset by a teacher or incident from their past. My main objective when working with people in math is to break down those fears. When this happens, without fail, the doors begin to open and learning becomes much easier for the learner. As far as science, I believe that people need to experience science to understand it, so I am a big advocate of "doing science" in a lab setting or even at the household level.
Education has been more or less a family business. When I graduated with a degree in chemistry, I did not imagine I would follow the rest of my family. I ended up teaching chemistry and algebra part time at high school in Southern New England and soon added other adjunct teaching jobs to it. Now I teach at the same high school, a community college and I am a coordinator for an adult educ ... read more
