We see education as a meeting of minds, where every participant is on the same level. While a tutor may well have more knowledge of a subject than the student, learning is a communicative and collaborative process; the transmission of ideas can only happen when we acknowledge we each have something to learn from one another. Part of what makes Logic Studies so successful and distinctive is that we refuse to fall into the prescribed teacher-student dynamic. Never condescending and demonstrating mutual respect, the tutors at Logic Studies treat their students as peers, or coequals .

Due to my certification and years of experience I've taught every subject area in grades K-8, worked with high school students in language arts and sciences, assisted with study skills and test preparation and taught reading to adults as well as other college level classes. I have a reading endorsement and a counseling psychology certification so I am versed in Special Education issue also. A Little Bit About Me...

My area of expertise is Mathematics. I have gained extensive mathematical knowledge by earning a BA in Mathematics from the rigorous program offered at Seattle Pacific University. I have experience tutoring a High School student in Algebra and Geometry. I also have experience tutoring an adult student in Algebra and Geometry. During college, I earned credits by being available to other college students, and primarily interacted with Intro level college math classes, as well as all levels of Calculus students.
I really enjoy working one on one with students, because in a one on one situation, I am really able to tailor my teaching to the individual. I try and recognize where the student is strong, and encourage those traits, while recognizing where they need growth, and doing my best to help them grow in those areas. I am a good listener so I my tutoring sessions are focused on t ... read more

Most of my experience has been with adults as learners--coaching, supervising, teaching groups of staff and colleagues in the mental health field, and now--teaching CPA candidates on what they need to pass the CPA exams. Prior to my work as a CPA and as a manager of human services programs, I was a clinician, working with children and adolescents and their families. I am not sure I have one teaching style. Over the years, I have learned that people learn differently and that the instructor/coach needs to first understand the learner's learning style before trying to teach. I love to see people grow and, personally, I love learning. My people skills and my enjoyment of learning are probably my greatest gifts as a teacher.
I have extensive experience as a provider and manager of human services in the field of mental health, and am recognized for my contributions to the fiel ... read more

I have an extensive experience in the field of tutoring. For the past eight years, I have work with students from age kindergarten to highschool. From one-on-one tutoring, small groups, to helping a class of more than 60 students. Therefore, I can recognize each student's ability and devised a studying plan to help them improve their weaknesses. With a Bachelor degree in Biology and Chemistry, I have a strong background in science and mathematics. Furthermore, I have taken many courses in Writing, English, and grammar.
Each student has different ways to learn. Some students require a more visual approach while ohers prefer repetion through listening and writing. I try to find the best way to help students learn and retain information. I believe that with the right help, every student has the potential to achieve academic success.

I am a senior at Reed College studying mathematics. While at Reed I have worked as both a grader and a tutor. Having graded assignments, I can quickly grasp multiple ways to approach a problem and give commentary where necessary. I also have experience working at an alternative school as a math tutor, with students who have trouble succeeding in traditional learning environments. Furthermore, being a current student and having recently taken the GREs, much of the material is still fresh in my mind.
As both a math student and tutor, I believe the most effective approach to learning is for the tutor to act as a guide, allowing the students to make the important connections. I am very patient and have good communication skills.

Educationally, I have a BA in Mathematics from Vassar College, a school where I achieved a high level of success graduating with high honors both generally and within my major. While this gives me the mastery necessary to approach all levels of math up to the graduate level, my teaching experience makes it possible for me to convey those subjects to my students. I began working one on one with students while teaching guitar in high school and since then have continued to facilitate students' learning at various levels. Most recently I've pursued experiential education working with kids on farms, backpacking trips, and canoe expeditions. I apply this hands on approach to education in the classroom as well, one that I found successful while teaching Linear Algebra to college freshmen my senior year.
For various reasons, we all learn in different ways. Often times this is difficu ... read more

I strongly believe that an education that leads with concepts instead of rote is the surest route to lifelong success. This is certainly the method that worked for me, and I find that, without the conceptual grounding, a student will not get as much out of necessary practice exercises. Thus, when I am working with a student on a subject, I tend to approach the concept foremost, creatively using a wide range of examples and descriptions to elucidate it. This is the best use of my time with a student, instead of just correcting their exercises. It also requires the confidence of the student to know that they can fully grasp a concept first, and then put it into practice, so I like to encourage that personal confidence.
Throughout my education, I've found that broad academic interests have led me to pursue a wide range of subjects simultaneously. My undergraduate degree is a double ma ... read more

As a Portland State University graduate, I have learned how important it is to have a solid math foundation to continue to build and achieve higher education. Through University of Oregon and Portland State University, I have earned two degrees; a Bachelors of Science degree in Mathematics as well as a degree in Science. I have tutored several students, ranging from 1st grade to college level. I have tutored for/ through three different institutions: Portland State University, American Tutoring, Inc., and WyzAnt Tutoring, Inc. During the last four years, I have spent a large amount of time working with, and around middle school and High school students. I have spent time in the classroom, worked with small groups, and spent one summer working with multiple summer camps up and down the coast. I love working with students, especially individually or in smaller groups. I also have expierence as a help desk specialist, which allows me to work with and around computers. I can help students understand how to use the tools they already have to help with their classroom activities and assignments, such as calculators, and computers.
My teaching style focuses on teaching students how to find the big picture. If they understand what it is they are trying to do, then showing them how to get there becomes easier. Any student can learn math, and have the capability to understand numbers, this just comes harder for so ... read more

I am an adherent of the one-size-doesn't-fit-all policy. I always try to identify with each student's strength and weakness for a course and adapt to their pace. I make my teaching interesting by being passionate about it, well prepared for the class and also explaining concepts with humor and clarity while holding their interest and attention span. I do not make assumptions on student's strengths--I try to make sure they know what they are presumed to know. Oftentimes, it was helpful when I gave a crush course on concepts they are required to know. As we study together, we work to build student's confidence through understanding and command of the subject, alleviating their fear and making test taking a wonderful experience.

I love teaching and relating to people. I know from personal experience that one good teacher can change the way a student views an entire subject. I am easy-going, friendly, and patient. I believe that all students have great potential and should be given every opportunity to fulfill it.
Having graduated from a liberal arts university, I know that being well-rounded is very important in life. I graduated from Whitworth with a BS in Math and minors in Spanish and Computer Science, so I know what it is like to learn complex subjects. I have tutored my peers along with students younger and older than myself, as a mathematician and a Spanish speaker. I led a Spanish Live Lab for two years and informally tutored math for four. Also, I have a great deal of grammatical knowledge from writing research papers in math and computer science and Spanish.
