Most of my experience has been with adults as learners--coaching, supervising, teaching groups of staff and colleagues in the mental health field, and now--teaching CPA candidates on what they need to pass the CPA exams. Prior to my work as a CPA and as a manager of human services programs, I was a clinician, working with children and adolescents and their families. I am not sure I have one teaching style. As both a math student and tutor, I believe the most effective approach to learning is for the tutor to act as a guide, allowing the students to make the important connections. I am very patient and have good communication skills.
I am a senior at Reed College studying mathematics. While at Reed I have worked as both a grader and a tutor. I strongly believe that an education that leads with concepts instead of rote is the surest route to lifelong success. This is certainly the method that worked for me, and I find that, without the conceptual grounding, a student will not get as much out of necessary practice exercises. Thus, when I am working with a student on a subject, I tend to approach the concept foremost, creatively using a wide range of examples and descriptions to elucidate it. This is the best use of my time with a student, instead of just correcting their exercises.
