My comments on tutoring Life Science : Highly qualified k-8

For 20 years I worked for Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools, as a fifth through 7th Grade classroom teacher. I taught all of the academic subjects in various combinations, sometimes all at once to a self-contained class. The State of Tennessee recognized me as "Highly Qualified" in all subjects, from Kindergarten through 8th Grade. I served on the district's math council for 5 years, helped direct the district's science fair one year, and worked extensively in the field of arts-based curriculum development. I also was trained in the IB curriculum, and implemented it for 10 years.
Constructivist, multi-sensory, inquiry-based.

My philosophy is that a student should not only know the right answer but understand how to come to the right answer and the relevance of this knowledge in their daily lives. I dedicate myself to patient explanations of the materials leavened with entertaining trivia and asides that add context and a little fun to the learning. I look forward to learning about the world with you.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a pre-med student at MTSU, and I will be graduating with a second degree in Science this year. I have experience tutoring grade school students in math and reading subjects. I also have experience teaching college students in science subjects. Before attending MTSU, I was a professional ballroom dancer and instructor for five years. I have experience teaching ballroom dancing to children as young as five and adults as young as 70!
I am a believer in learning and understanding concepts and principles of the subject being studied. Asking why and how we come to a conclusion rather than memorizing or mindlessly going through steps generates long term success. I believe that this is the best way for a student to prepare for any question or scenario that may be asked or given as well as preparing for future expansion in the subject.

I chose teaching as a career because I love working with children and making a difference in their lives. I want my students to be successful and will use the technique that works best for each child. I have been to several workshops and training sessions to learn different methods to help students master the material they need to know. I try to make learning fun for them.
I graduated from Arkansas State University in 1974 and taught third grade for seven and a half years, then moved to another town and taught 5th grade resource for six years. My convictions for teaching are deeply rooted. Being a teacher is at the core of who I am. I am patient, understanding, and considerate with each child. I maintain a positive attitude, full of encouragement, in order to provide the best education possible. I believe that if teachers are able to have positive attitudes and project a general attitude of success and achievement, students are more likely to believe that they can achieve. Before we can teach a student anything, we must first instill in them the belief that they are capable of succeeding. If we can spark interest in a student and then project that positive attitude in a safe, productive learning community, we give each student a chance to succeed.

A Little Bit About Me...

I earned a Bachelors degree in Chemistry and a minor in Biochemistry ins 2007 from the University of Colorado. I attended the University of Hawaii briefly where I was a teaching assistant for freshman level general chemistry lab. I taught lab, prepared quizzes, tests, and oversaw the general safety of my students. I also during this same time worked in the tutorial room where students of all levels of chemistry could come in with questions regarding homework, quizzes, and questions prior to the exam.
I believe in teaching by example. I know especially in chemistry, examples help see the proper technique and variables needed to solve the problem. I feel that if a student is memorizing an equation but does not understand the process of finding and filling in variables, this will not help them get to the correct answer. A student need to dissect the equation in order to understa ... read more

Seeing the look and smile on the face of a student that finally grasps a concept, or realizes they have just read on their own for the first time, OH What a Feeling!!! I take each child as their own individual knowing they have their own needs in learning a subject. I teach in several different ways as to ensure the child grasps what they need. I see children today as my future for tomorrow, so helping them and making a difference in their lives will make a difference in mine. I have not forgotten any individual I have helped to this day.
