Experience throughout school, work and personal experience dealing with the mentally challenged and dyslexia. my best friend had a son who was dyslexic and also he had ADD and I got him to trust me in babysitting and I taught him various things. I taught him how to read and write he could not accomplish that on his own. He was 11 at the time and I think with kids you have to be creative to teach them and I am very creative. I went to Dixie State College and studied science courses while working as a drop-in math tutor. When it comes to math, there is always more than one way to attack the problem at hand and each method appeals to different students. I usually start off with one and I can quickly tell if another would be more effective for each individual since I've noticed everyone has different styles of learning. I do believe everything mathematical can be taught and learned - there are no lost causes when it comes to math.
I received my BS in Electrical Engineering in December. I was one of two who graduated under the Honor's Program and maintained a 3.72 GPA. I've been tutoring math ever since my second semester in college and even while I was in high school. I've taken Calculus 3, differential equations, linear algebra, and discrete mathematics and received an A in each of them. I have yet to complete my senior year of studies at the University but I will be done by Spring 2011. I have previously been a tutor for private individuals while I was making my way through college, and also as a professional duty while I was employed by the Salt Lake City Public Library, where I worked for six years. I have not been a tutor for a few years, although I currently volunteer with the International Rescue Committee in Salt Lake by assisting program workers teach english speaking and reading skills to new refugee immigrant women.
I love teaching, but to students about 12 and older. I am able to relate and connect well with them, and let them learn and take pride in their progress. Especially with younger kids, a high degree of focus on my part can be necessary to keep them on task, but I find that one can be firm with them and not need to be patronizing or forceful.
