Experienced math tutor.

It depends on the student and what they are doing. If all they need is practice, then I will let the student do all of the work, interjecting only to give advice or to correct a mistake if the student does not catch it themselves. If needed, I will work out similar problems. If the student needs help understanding, I first go in depth why it works and why you do what you do. I then give concrete examples to demonstrate it so that the why makes sense and comes together with the actual application. Then I have the student practice to make sure they truly understand. If needed, I will become creative and come up with different ways of looking at problems so that they can make sense. But no matter what I try to have fun. The best way to learn is to have fun, and if you aren't enjoying yourself you probably won't be receptive to learning.

Engaging and educating the mind

I have worked with children between the ages of 4-10 tutoring in areas like math and spanish. Also, I have helped adults better understand logic course material more fluently at my school NC A&T State University. Held a refresher course for elementary children during summer camps i've worked at for their english. I also like to work with the client and figure out new ways to help them better understand. This has been done through games, relevant age appropriate references, and other means.
I like to give the children more hands on material, to try and reach them at their respective level. For adults, I do help them, but try and guide them to figure it out on their own. I have found in my experience that it is better retained when the client thinks through it them selves.

More About This Tutor...

I graduated from Ronald Reagan High School with a 4.6 GPA in the second graduating class ('08), then went on the NC State University to study Engineering, where I jumped in between various Engineering programs for three years before simply deciding to take a break and truly figure out what I want to study. While this may deter several people from choosing me, I know that if you met me and/or any of my teachers from any grade level, they/I could certainly set the record straight, as I am quite a smart person, I have simply struggled with getting my life into an appropriate schedule. This is because between high school, my extra curriculars (captain of the drumline for three years and a captain of the lacrosse team for three years), and my parents, my life was completely structured for me, so what little free time I had was easy to budget, this is not the case in high school. I love teaching and working with students of all ages. I have tutored students from various background and abilities. My desire is to change student perception of math and create a welcoming learning environment for all of my students.

In the beginning being a doctor was all that I desired. Helping others, tending to their wounds and etc was my dream. It wasn't until I had the honor of tutoring others that I realized, my passion to teach was equally as strong as my passion for medicine. I feel no child is incapable of learning. As long as one remembers that everyone is different, and that each person brings a different amount of prior knowledge with them. By bearing that in mind it allows you the ability to adjust and when working with children a teacher must know how to adjust so that each child is reached. I love education, and I love assisting others in reaching their potential.
During my time as an undergraduate I was blessed with the opportunity of tutoring others. I have earned one bachelor degree, BS in Biology with and emphasis in genetics. Along with my bachelors I have obtained two minors as well, one c ... read more

It is my pleasure to be of assistance to any student in any subject matter. I love being able to help others in subjects where they are weak. I have a pretty flexible and open schedule and I am readily available to assist your child. I am very understanding, easy to get along with, and persistent when it comes to working with students. I believe that students learn best by doing, therefore there will be a lot of independent thinking and problem solving. My goal is to produce a more confident, educated, and self-sufficient student.

In addition to tutoring during high school, I have worked at an independent local tutoring company and at the local Huntington Learning Center since I've graduated college. As an English major, avid reader, and proficient writer, my specialty is English and SAT Verbal, but I can also tutor in other subjects. I've helped younger students with their homework and studying in subjects such as 8th grade science, 5th grade math (for a student in a Spanish immersion program), middle school and high school history/social studies and many others. Currently, I'm studying SAT math in order to be more adept at tutoring in various mathematics.

More About This Tutor...

While working on my undergrad I was given the opportunity to be a teaching assistant for a freshman college level film theory and design class. During this opportunity I was responsible for grading the daily work of our students, as well as being a resource for the students design projects. I taught lectures based on film theory and design, as well as specific pieces of film.
I myself am a visual and auditory learner, so I am very open to all types of teaching styles. I find that people learn better when several avenues of learning are available for a subject. Also repetition is a very important device for making knowledge permanent. I like to bring a fun and light atmosphere to learning.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have left the corporate after 18 years to pursue teaching. I have two bachelors degrees in physics & mech. engineering. I want to put these to use and make an impact on kids in my community. I have been pursuing a lateral teaching entry position, while substituting. I am mentoring with a local teacher and have finished a course in effective teaching. I am tutoring at my church and reading education material, along with boning up on science material.
I am by nature an encourager. I am optimistic every child can learn -- the trick is to spark an interest in the subject and communicate the material to them in an understandable way. Learning at its best should be fun and educational, though not necessarily entertaining. Having said that, there are no shortcuts for hardwork and homework and repetitions on problem solving.
