My teaching style involves three major components, namely patience, preparation, and presentation. My teaching style is hands on. I give hints and partial answers in an effort to encourage students to think through problems and attempt to solve them. If necessary, I separate an idea into simpler terms, and help students learn each term before continuing. I give examples which illustrate a point or demonstrate a procedure. At times, my students write short essays, which I critique for sentence structure, word choice, tense matching, and organization. When a student is reading aloud, I follow along, interjecting if necessary with the correct pronunciation or the proper syllable emphasis.

My style of teaching is to first get the student to understand the basics that are needed as a foundation. For example, my friend was having trouble completing accounting homework and I soon realized that it was because he had not memorized the basic equations; i.e., "assets - liabilities = owner's equity," and "beginning inventory + purchases - ending inventory = cost of goods sold." Just about impossible to advance without the basics.

A Little Bit About Me...

With my background in social work and facilitation, I have learned that flexibility and patience are critical when teaching young people. Each session with a young person involves meeting the child where they arere at, honoring and praising what they do possess, and then moving forward to areas that may be a bit more challenging.
