History and English: NOT BORING! RELEVANT!!

Motivation. Hard work is made even harder when we don't enjoy the subject; for example, History can easily become boring and impossible to follow for young, energetic minds. When these events are brought to life, however, and made personally relevant to the student as part of our shared past, we may inspire curiosity which is the prime quality of a young scholar. Grammar and literature can also be tiresome and difficult, but their relevance is much easier to validate as reading and writing will always be crucial skills for our future leaders.
As a recent graduate of the University of Oregon History Department, I have spent the last two years working with peers to enhance their ability to research, comprehend, and explain historical events through writing. This experience includes courses in Grammar and Literature as well as History of both the U.S. and the world. With a string ... read more

My comments on tutoring Government : I taught a high school government class for 4 months as part of my student teaching in a Utah high school.

I am loving, patient, and fun.
I am a very patient and loving person and am great with people. I graduated in History Teaching and secondary education. I have been in the schools at all levels as part of my curriculum, as well as voluntary work and as a substitute. I also worked as an ESL teacher for two years, speak Portuguese fluently, and speak a little bit of Spanish. So I have a lot of teaching experience. I received a coaching minor and have experience with basketball, tennis, and soccer. I am also a very fun person. I have worked as an activities coordinator for over 5 years, and am a very creative person.

I love working with people and have done my best to always be doing so throughout my life. While in high school, I tutored and mentored other high school students. While in college, I started working with all age groups (pre-K through college), working as a mentor and a tutor for fellow college students. I have learned the importance of adapting my teaching style to the person that I am working with in order to help them succeed. I want every person that I help to reach his or her full potential. I will feel exceptionally honored if you choose me to make a difference in your child’s life.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love the field of education and am especially talented when it comes to working with elementary-aged students (all subjects). I enjoy tutoring older students in Spanish (I'm fluent), history, English, social studies, reading and E.S.L. My weak subjects for older students are math and science. I have a B.A. in Social Work with a Spanish minor. I have teaching certificates in elementary ed., special ed., teaching English as a 2nd Language & Spanish. I have an M.A. in International Relations. I have tutored students in E.S.L., reading, writing, Spanish and elementary math.
I strongly believe that education is a life-long learning experience, that children are able to learn from each other, that a teacher can facilitate the learning process and that students and teachers are able to learn from each other. A Little Bit About Me...

As a counselor for two summers at Camp Harlow (eugene, OR), I had my hands full playing, mentoring, and getting know up to twelve kids every week from the ages of 5-14. During this time, effective communication skills were paramount to success along with patience and listening. I work hard to communicate clearly and simply on an appropriate level. This has afforded me many opportunities to successfully mentor others. I believe learning is best done through teaching and dynamic communication. Overall, I would like to reinforce that my teaching style emphasizes efficient communication through the proper definition of concepts and the clear and appropriate use of language.

I earned a B.S. in Secondary Education focusing on literacy and written expression, as well as Special Education methodology. This foundation allows me to successfully relate content to students with diverse learning needs, and assess student progress. I have assumed an instructional role in many settings. These include: a student teacher in a 7th grade classroom, a reading tutor at a summer enrichment program for marginalized youth, a camp counselor at an outdoor nature camp, a tutor in a school resource room, and a guest speaker for students visiting my college from Boston. With my past experience with students, and knowledge of language arts and instructional methods, I can surely meet the needs of virtually any student.

I hold BAs in History and Modern Languages (German/French), and have done graduate work in Theology and French Translation. I am fluent in German, literate in French, and able to provide basic assistance with Russian, Japanese, and Afrikaans. I have been a substitute teacher (all subjects, K-12), a university tutor, an ESL instructor in Montreal, and a guest editor at an academic journal.
