As an English major who sauntered through college, I know that a decent grade on a paper comes regardless of your skill or ability with writing or reading, but rather from how well you make note of the important ideas and events of what you have to read. In the lower grade schools, proving to the teacher that you've read the material is often enough to get a good grade, while in high school and college the key is to mention or display the ideas of the author that your teacher has been beating you over the head with.
