I graduated from Mount Union College in May 2006 with a BA in History and a double minor in Adoloescent to Young Adult Education and American Studies. Throughout high school I was a teacher's assistant helping with students in class during my study halls as well as working one on one with students for extra study skills. In the past few years I have tutored students in elemtary math, middle school reading and writing, and even my own students before and after school in social studies. I currently teach Civics and Economics which is an EOC course and I have taught this for 6 years now. Teacher with gentle touch - Very good at explaining new subj

Web manager and usability analyst as well as instructor. I have been asked at various jobs to teach training classes to my peers because of my ability to deliver an easy to understand lesson. I've been told I am very good at explaining a topic that someone has no experience with at all. I am on contract with NC States Computer Training Unit.
I try to find the teaching style that is going to work for the student. Are they visual? Do they need to touch to learn? Finding out how to teach them and then helping them learn skills for independent study are just as important as the material.

I believe all children can do well at school if they are taught correctly. Every child learns differently and it is the job of the teacher to find the style that works for the student. Some students use verbal cues to learn while others visual, hands on or a variety of other approaches. The better we teach the children today the b ... read more

My experience began as a tutor in college and upon graduating I taught eighth grade science, high school sciences (biology, physical and earth), community college level biology (I and II) and biotechnology. I have a MS in Biology (research/thesis and study focus in biochemistry) and have tutored students in mathematics and English. I have experience teaching exceptional children (TBI, ADD, ADHD, BD, AG or GT) and volunteered with Head Start for years.
As a tutor my initial focus is identifying the students strengths and applying them when addressing areas where the student has a deficit. It is important to motivate the student in order to give confidence in their ability to face academic challenges. The key is to establish or enhance the foundation of student learning by developing a positive relationship with developing dependency. It is also important that the student develo ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

In my last year of college I chose to complete my field placement research project at an accelerated junior high school for low income families. At this school I was in charge of the after-school science club. I helped the adolescents learn aspects of science they wouldn't learn in the classroom. We also competed at a state Science Olympic competition. I was also in charge of after-school homework centers as well as a science and math tutor.
I love teaching adolescents. I think it is very fulfilling to watch a child obtain knowledge. I have a very hands-on teaching style. I like to work through all the problems and questions that the children have. I pride myself on using unique examples to explain complex problems and concepts.

I enjoy working with children of all age ranges, and it is my personal goal to make learning a difficult subject less of a chore. I believe that having extra help can make a world of difference in academic success and increase the overall confidence and attitude in a child, as I am very aware myself, having had math tutors when I was in high school. My ambition as a tutor is to give your child the same enjoyment that I experienced in learning Chemistry and English. I am patient and dedicated and I strive for excellence—in my tutoring style I am open and willing to use different approaches to teach if needed. I ask questions and also try to tutor with a similar style to the student's teacher, which can be a critical tool during test taking.
Being a student at UNC Chapel Hill has challenged and inspired me to think creatively and achieve excellence in all areas of academia. As a seni ... read more

More About This Tutor...

As an educator, I am not primarily concerned with what skill level one may be at at one particular time or another. What concerns me most is the student's willingness to try and I feel that that is harvested through a teacher's patience, encouragement, guidance, support and a willingness to try new approaches. I also feel that a positive attitude is one of the most valuable assets a teacher/tutor can bring to child's day.
As a Physical Education and Health Education teacher, I have come to appreciate that all children operate in various ways. Some pick up on material sooner than others, while there are still those who are in need of support. In my tutoring experience, which has been a very positive experience, I have created various learning tools so that my students may achieve their maximum potential. Prior to settling into a Phys. Ed. career, I was also an English major who ... read more

While completing my master’s degree in accounting, I tutored undergraduate students in introductory level accounting classes and college algebra (part-time) for two years. I have recently applied for and been granted a Preparer Tax ID number (PTIN) by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). I recently left my job at PricewaterhouseCoopers as a senior associate, after working there for three and one-half years in public accounting. A Little Bit About Me...

My unique experiences and rigorous education will enable me to make a positive contribution to any students education. I have a BS in Chemistry with a minor in Biological Sciences from NC State University. In addition to my scientific background, I have served as a private tutor for college students, a teaching assistant for chemistry labs, and an assistant coach at a children's fencing club over the past 5 years. The interpersonal skills and technological knowledge I've learned in these positions are invaluable in a teaching environment.
I've taught students in a variety of environments: as a chemistry lab TA, as a youth fencing coach, and as a private tutor. While I believe that the details of quantum mechanics may be difficult for many individuals to fathom, I think that most scientific and mathematical concepts can be easy to grasp with the right instruction. Teaching to me is about relating the information to the students in a way they can understand. It is very important to make the material relevant to their lives somehow. Therefore it is important to get to know your students and their hobbies and interests. Another key thing needed to teach is patience. You cannot expect them to race through anything. Everyone has their own pace. It is also important to make the information interesting and entertaining to some extent, Especially for younger students. Sometimes an educational game is just as good at getting the information across but at the same time engages the students and keeps them interested.
I have been tutoring since I was 13 years old. Parents of my peers always approached me to teach their son or daughter. After I completed high school with a 4.0 GPA I was hired at a professional tutoring school. There I worked fo ... read more

I see the role of the educator as a pivotal element in not only academic success, but social and cultural success as well. Therefore my teaching skills often incorporate pockets of knowledge from various disciplines. I also believe that the role of the teacher can also mirror the role of the student, as both teacher and student can learn from each other. I believe that children should be given the necessary tools that foster intellectual curiosity, so as to sharpen creativity and independent thinking. My approach to teaching is not to just impart information, but to impart information in such a way that will lend for students to engage in questioning and realization of answers. Because after all, learning is discovery!
