I have been a volunteer for various literacy programs for the past several years, focusing primarily on phonics rather than sight reading. I have worked in two group homes for dually diagnosed adults, meaning both physically and mentally challenged. I went to school online at Ashford University, for 2 years in an accelerated Bachelor's Degree program with a focus on education. With an inborn gift of language art skills and being a tutor for about the past 20 years, I have learned how to relate easily to any age group or functioning level. I am a creative teacher, meaning that I assess the individual and do not have an agenda that I adhere to. Normally, I am able to advance a child a grade level in reading with three months of tutoring and reinforcing homework, during the summer. I was a tutor for the School of Business and Economics in Elizabeth City where I earned by BS in Business in 2003. I tutored beginning through Intermediate accounting, Principles of Marketing and other business subjects from 2000-2003. I was a formal tutor for one year and a student tutor for 2 years. I currently tutor family members, friends and church members in all basic elementary through college subjects. (ex. Algebra, Physics, Chemistry, Accounting, Statistics,English etc. ) Basically, if you have a book or instructions we can get a passing grade out of the class. I feel comfortable and I am qualified to tutor through Spanish II. As a tutor, I review previous test, quizzes and work with the student to see where the "disconnect" lies. Beginning my sign language career in high school, I have learned to embrace the beautiful language and culture of the deaf community. At that time, I began to tutor a deaf child with minimal language skills and have been tutoring on and off ever since. During my college years, I was asked to tutor American Sign Language for the University of South Florida's athletic program. Currently, I am an educational sign language interpreter working in a middle school. I have my Bachelors degree in Communication and Science Disorders with a concentration in the Interpreter Training Track as well as a minor in American Sign Language. I have my Florida’s Quality Assurance Level One Certification for interpreters and continue to strive to improve my skills everyday.
