A Little Bit About Me...

I believe each child has their own learning style. Through a variety of approaches and materials each child can find success in reading and math in their elementary school years. I enjoy finding each child's path to success.
I have taught Special Education for 26 years and third grade for 6. I have tutored using the Reading Assist program and various other methods for reading. I also have many techniques for teaching math to young learners. I enjoy working with children one on one or in small groups. I have retired from teaching but would like to continue working with children part-time. I have been substituting the past couple of years since retiring.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have always been involved in assisting and helping others in education. I earned a BS in Visual Arts, Minoring in Art Education, as well as BFA in Computer Animation. In addition, I did some tutoring during my graduate studies ,turtoring incoming freshmens for a Summer Bridge Program. After graduating from college, I worked in a Top Secret position in Washington, D.C. I left that position to pursue teaching, and earned a Masters from Boston University. I taught high school classes for several years, and also worked in IT as a trainer and troubleshooter. I was asked to direct a community college basic skills program, and did so for 7 years, rising to a Dean's level. I have more recently taught and consulted for a private primary school. I am a currently a working civil engineer specializing in bridge design (steel and concrete structures). I received scores of 760 in Math on both the SAT I and II, and a score of 800 in Math on the GRE's. I have taken several high level calculus, engineering mathematics, and statistics classes at the University of Delaware, aside from receiving a 5 on both the Calculus and the Statistics AP Exams. I have tutored elementary students in the past, and was part of a 'teaching scientists' after school company briefly in college.
I believe in talking through problems using visual ideas and simplified concepts. I prefer teaching with graphics and concepts, and then relating them to formulas and equations. While I expect hard work from my students, I also have the patience to help them understand at their own pace.

I love to teach and help others in general. I always had difficulty when I was younger finding a tutor or some help in my studies that I could understand easily. I am a very patient and have a great sense of humor that come in handy during subjects of frustration. I believe if you can bring a child into their comfort zone and put the directions in the most simple fashion, a child can learn anything! I just graduated with a BA in Psychology and are two courses short of a minor in Spanish and Sociology. I've always been very strong in the English/Language Arts/Writing areas as well. I am currently a certified substitute teacher and also already do some elementary tutoring.
