I earned my bachelor degree from the University of Minnesota Duluth in Teaching Secondary Mathematics and Secondary Earth and Space Science in 2001. Since that time, I have been teaching secondary classes at the same school which include: Earth science, astronomy, geology, transition mathematics, algebra I, algebra II, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, and computer applications. I earned my Master of Science in Science Education from Montana State University in 2008. My thesis was on the effects of teaching through the multiple intelligences by incorporating art with the sciences. My approach to teaching involves finding the best learning venue for each individual student. I don't believe in 'fitting' the student to the method, rather finding the method that works for each individual. I use phonetics when that is the simplest method, the challenge of games/competition when that is what clicks for my student. I tend to teach things in a visual way. Drawing pictures, diagrams and using visual aides are the best ways I have witnessed to teach kids. I also think a structured reward system is HUGE in motivating kids to succeed. You need to find out what motivates your kid (money, toys, etc) and set up a system where he/she can earn these rewards through academic success.
