A Little Bit About Me...

My students often say I can’t be a teacher because they “just get it" when I explain. Even so, my degree is in math and I've taught professionally and privately. I have a history of maintaining high scores and would rather show why something works than how to follow steps. I don't expect students to love math or do it "my way" but I want students to know math isn't scary. To this end, I explain every step, do assessments to determine student needs and base instruction on student knowledge. If possible, I like to make sure students are comfortable working alone before I leave and will help students learn mental shortcuts, use a calculator and think logically. Overall I love watching students succeed.

Obtaining my Bachelors and Masters from a prestigious university has provided me with not only a pertinent educational background but also a great appreciation for the importance of education. The courses I taught at Rutgers University and my current teaching position at IADT have provided me with invaluable experience in being able to work with a diverse group of students with different learning styles. My area of expertise lies in Math and Economics, however, I am also proficient in Science, English and effectively knowledgeable in all other subjects. In 1963-64 I attended the Institute for American Universities in France, and also visited many other countries around the world, all of which increased my interest in languages and social studies. I taught upper elementary classes for 5 years, and after working in many other fields, taught ESOL for12 years as a private tutor, for Berlitz Languages, and for adults in the San Juan District with a specialty in pronunciation. I substituted in a wide variety of classes in middle and high schools in Elk Grove, and have tutored students aged 4 to 60 in social studies, English writing, including composition, reading, speaking and listening.
