There is no better of a feeling than to have a former student come back and tell you how much you helped them once they have went off to college. Showing students love and respect, as well as, treating them fair makes a difference when teaching. When students know that you care about them,that is when the student will put the best foot forward to learn.
As an undergraduate tutoring math, I realized quickly that I had a gift to explain math and make it easy for others to understand. My college professors asked me on several occasions to teach there class when they could not be there to teach. This experience inspired me to become a teacher. I believe that all children can learn and all children are capable of learning. But, all students learn differently, so, I feel that by changing lessons and incorporating different things into each one to accomodate most, or all, students is necessary. When children are able to learn and gain experiences on their own, with little or no teacher intervention, they learn at their best. For the past two years, I have been working as an adjunct instructor and tutor in mathematics and computer information systems for a local Community College. This experience has been so fulfilling, that I am diligently pursuing a career change from Information Technology professional to teaching. I also taught mathematics for one year at a private school.
Students generally perform better with hands-on practice. I provide multiple opportunities for hands-on and guided practice as time permits. Associate new concepts to familiar ones. Our memories are largely associative in nature. Therefore, providing connections from new concepts back to well established ones increases our retention and recall.
