This experience has been so fulfilling, that I am diligently pursuing a career change from Information Technology professional to teaching. I also taught mathematics for one year at a private school.
Students generally perform better with hands-on practice. I provide multiple opportunities for hands-on and guided practice as time permits. Associate new concepts to familiar ones. Our memories are largely associative in nature. Therefore, providing connections from new concepts back to well established ones increases our retention and recall. I evaluate each child during my first session to determine their learning style and their level of need. Once we establish that, I tailor a program of study designed to improve not only the current subject at hand but also to provide long term study habits they can take into their future learning experiences. I use various methods of oral, written and guided reading, memorization and visual learning to reach as many of the brain's centers of learning as possible to truly help the child retain the information long term.
