A Little Bit About Me...

I am a graduate from Middle Tennessee State University with a Bachelors degree in English; in which, has enabled me an understanding in subject of English and writing. Upon receiving my degree, I began working for Smith County Middle School as an In School Suspension teacher. I am currently finishing my second year at this position. My responsibilities are to tutor and teach various degrees of students with various subject disciples while in school suspension. I seek a student-centered classroom with a balance of authority and trustworthiness in the teacher so that the students respect me while at the same time feeling comfortable to share their ideas freely. I like for students to apply what they learn soon after the lesson. For example, if the subject was math, and we had been doing multiplication by flash cards, I might ask a question about the number of squares on a chess board. The idea is to firmly ground the students with their comfort zone as foundation and build upon their confidence with new ways of applying what they have learned so that they continue thinking outside of the rote lesson.

My experience as a teacher and instructor has been centered around my experience as a musician. Learning how to play and read music drastically helped me in school in all of my other subject areas. I knew early on that I would continue to play music and also that I would want to stay involved with music in some way. While earning my MA in English, I spent two years tutoring students in English and training/mentoring other tutors. For the last two years, I have been designing and delivering trianing curriculum. I have plans to return to Middle Tennessee State University in January 2012 to earn my PhD in Math and Science Education.
I love helping people, particularly children, reach their full potential by becoming life-long learners.
