As a current graduate student I have had the opportunity to learn a great deal about the effective techniques and skills it takes for one to succeed within the classroom. Spanish is my native language. I taught Spanish during the 2006-07 school year at Cimarron Montessori School while also serving as a teacher’s assistant at Monroe Elementary School. The following school year (2007-08) I moved to Bangor, Maine where I worked as a substitute Spanish teacher and substitute Educational Technician at Bangor High School and William Cohen Middle School. I received the highest ratings from the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, and plan to pursue certification as a Spanish teacher this year. I believe most of my success comes from continued conversations and ongoing discussions about best practices during staff meetings and professional development workshops. I believe if we can integrate content with cross-curricular themes and skills such as writing across the curriculum in all subjects, not just during the language arts block, All students can access prior knowledge and reframe their thinking when appropriate.
