My name is Jorge Hernandez-Lasa and I am a native speaker from Spain. Currently I am studying the PhD doctorate at UW where I have been teaching Spanish 102 and 203. I am able to teach Spanish as well as prepare student to take language exams I did a Spanish Teaching Internship for 5 months where I taught a Spanish at intermediate level to Korean students. (3 hours per week). Currently, I am a TA in the Spanish Department at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. I have lived in Mexico and Costa Rica after studying Spanish throughout high school and college. I have tutored on and off for the past 12 years. I have tutored people from 5th grade to age 50. I have much experience tutoring any type of math up to Algebra II. I have also tutored in Spanish on numerous occasions. I prefer to have materials prepared prior to any tutoring session so communication ahead of time will be essential. If I have an idea of what is expected of me then I am able to help modify the session to fit the learner. I like to use both direct teach as well as discussion to help guide the tutoring session. I have a wide variety of educational experience and have recently crossed over into the realm of education as a Special Education/At-Risk teacher with the Edgerton School District. My current position has me utilizing differentiated instruction and modification techniques with nearly 50 students throughout the day which will enhance my ability to tutor others who need help. I was born in Santiago, Chile and moved to the U.S. when I was 7...I have lived here in the United States for 13 years now and kept my Spanish. I completely fluent in both languages. I have been attending Northern Illinois University for the past 3 years and so far have had a great experience. I am double majoring in Spanish and geography and have had good success in both subject areas with a cumulative GPA of 3.95. They are both interests of mine and I have definitely improved during my time at NIU. I think I am qualified to share what I've learned with others who need help in either area and really enjoy working with people. I think teaching style should depend on the student. Some people move at different paces or learn better from listening or from doing the work themselves with supervision and help. As a SPS member while attending UW-Whitewater I gave tutoring lessons to physics students who needed help i not only physics but also mathematics.
