Working with people, particularly children, has always been a passion of mine. Through the psychology program at Husson College I was able to gain a better understanding of human interaction, interpersonal relationships, as well as to obtain further insight on the foundation of the cognitive wiring in which we all possess. I also have a 6 year old daughter, who I have found to be the key to my drive in watching all children achieve academic success. I think the process starts with parents but branches out into the world of educators, and truly is a battle that can be won as long as there is always a core group of people committed to each child's success in the classroom. Spanish is my native language. I taught Spanish during the 2006-07 school year at Cimarron Montessori School while also serving as a teacher’s assistant at Monroe Elementary School. The following school year (2007-08) I moved to Bangor, Maine where I worked as a substitute Spanish teacher and substitute Educational Technician at Bangor High School and William Cohen Middle School. I received the highest ratings from the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, and plan to pursue certification as a Spanish teacher this year. Just as language is a component of culture, I like to use culture to help my students learn Spanish. I prefer working as a collaborative team with teaching staff/specialists. I believe most of my success comes from continued conversations and ongoing discussions about best practices during staff meetings and professional development workshops. I believe if we can integrate content with cross-curricular themes and skills such as writing across the curriculum in all subjects, not just during the language arts block, All students can access prior knowledge and reframe their thinking when appropriate. Once we establish accountability through state standards, we need to teach one child at a time, at their own level and pace and eliminate lessons that do not move students toward meeting the standards.
