I use the Orton- Gilingham multi sensory approach.

ORTON-Gilingham multi sensory approach. Math without words until the concept is mastered. Using lots of manipulatives including video games, that teach concepts.
I Have worked for the Davis County School district for 12 years. The last few years I have been working intervention for students who are not performing at grade level. I have learned that not all kids can learn the way they are taught in school. My 8 year old is dyslexic. I Have studied the Orton-Gilingham multisensory approach to reading and spelling. I have also learned to engage children in activities that are fun and creative. I will not be doing the same teaching style as there school.

A Little Bit About Me...

My first and most recent experience was working with a young middle-school boy whom I was able to help improve his grades in Algebra from earning 20% on weekly quizzes to 93%. I worked with this client one hour a week for about two months, after that time he was doing well enough on his own and no longer required my services.

My comments on tutoring Psychology : I did take a psychology course in my senior year of High School. We went over the basic Freudian principles as well as others.

Throughout high school, I had trouble trying to figure out what I wanted to do when I graduated. I took many classes that ranged from Weight Training to Biology. I took many Art classes in which I excelled at. I then took some Computer Technology classes and I loved it. So I figured I would put the two together and took Graphic Design classes. I loved it. I am very competent in using all sorts of Graphic Design programs. I got my first guitar around 8 years ago and just picked it up and learned it. I have been learning ever since. I personally, have taught many people the basics of guitar and gave them the tools to excel in music.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have had 15 yrs experiences working with kids age 2-18 in different areas from reading, math, afterschool programs, special needs and general assistance. I completed my Masters in Education at Arizona State University and have worked in two different non-profits specializing in at risk youth completing high school. I have tutored in English, math, reading, and science in the elementary age. I have also tutored English and reading in junior high and high school.
I have a very interactive personality. I love to get kids involved in their subjects outside of the textbook. I have seen from years of experience that students do better when the can find real life applications of material in everyday life then just to finish an assignment. I know that there are many different learning styles and no one particular way can be right for every child. I am flexible and want to help children a ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style might be a bit unorthodox but it is something I have acquired from past teachers and tutors. I have not helped or tutored in a while but I believe I have an easy and simple approach to it. When it comes to physics and chemistry, the math can be learned over night, the concepts are most critical. You can't read a problem and interpret the question word for word. You have to find a way to relate it to real life and what you see everyday. A spinning disk becomes a truck tire, a sound device becomes a sub woofer. Things that you can relate to.
I have yet to complete my senior year of studies at the University but I will be done by Spring 2011. I am working towards my first Bachelors Degree, BS in Physics and will continue with school after until I get my MS in Chemical Engineering. Physics and Chemistry have always come easy to me and I know that because of this I can ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy working with children of most ages although I worked mainly with K, first, fourth and high school levels during my four years of experience. I believe everyone has the ability to reach their greatest potential with appropriate help and that sometimes extra assistance can be the difference between success and failure. I use rewards to help children feel better about what they have accomplished. I encourage the use of creativity in learning as long as it does not distract from the lesson that needs to be learned.
During my four years at Case Western Reserve University, I became aware of the needs of the city schools in the area and worked to help improve the situations in the schools. I worked with AmericaREADS, OhioREADS and other similar programs to help tutor children who were not able to get the individual attention they needed in the classroom. Because of my backgro ... read more

My teaching style varies depending on the type of students I am teaching to because I believe that each student has a particular learning style that they find easier. I think that it is important to find the types of learning that each student finds easiest to understand, and tailor the course so that it works well with their particular learning abilities. This can easily be done in a classroom setting as well as an individual basis. In either case, while I am teaching I think that it is important to understand the topic we are on before moving to the next one. Slowing down to completely grasp each idea helps students to gain confidence in their learning ability, and actually helps the classroom or individual to progress much faster overall. Giving students a hope for their future ability to learn is one of the best things I can do for them.
In preparation for college, I knew that ... read more

I love teaching children and finding ways of making learning come alive for them. I am always looking for creative ways to help students connect with what they are learning. For example, as a summative project in our unit on circuit electricity, my students built small, electric go-karts. Additionally, I am firmly committed to establishing a strong foundation of academic knowledge for my students. I believe students need to be directly taught the academic skills necessary to be successful in life.
As a 5th grade bilingual teacher, I have a strong commitment to each of my students. I tutor students outside of classroom time in order to ensure that they are successful. I have experience tutoring students in mathematics and reading. My graduate work consisted of an MA in teaching with an emphasis on research. I am also well versed in math, science, history, reading, and writin ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I have earned my BS in Biology from Westminster College. I am currently applying to veterinary schools to become an equine veterinarian. This path has led me to master the basic sciences, including biology, chemistry and physics, as well as to gain a solid background in mathematics through calculus and statistics. During the last four years I have tutored high school students in math and the sciences. I am an avid reader and excelled in my SAT and GRE Verbal and Reading Comprehension sections. I have a solid understanding of the test taking techniques that will help students excel at standardized tests. My extensive experience teaching horseback riding has also taught me how to work with children and young adults as an effective teacher.
I graduated from a small, hands-on high school that focused on experiential learning. This coupled with my time at a small liberal arts college d ... read more

More About This Tutor...

My educational background is in physics and mechanical engineering with minors in math and astronomy. After college, I've aimed towards obtaining a secondary math teacher license. Currently enrolled in the Alternative Routes to Licensure in SLC, I have taken education classes and gained 3-years experience teaching pre-algebra and 4th grade math and preschool. I have found that after teaching multiple grades, I want to focus on teaching math at a higher level. I have 6 years of tutoring experience both independent work and with ClubZ! Tutoring. I have tutored in Maine and SLC at the high school and college level in math, as well as at the high school level in biology, physics, and chemistry.
As a teacher, I prefer a student-directed teaching style over a teacher-directed learning style in the classroom. I believe that setting up lessons where the students develop concepts and ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am pretty comfortable in most subjects. I am interested in tutoring because I think I can relate well to students of all ages and I think I can explain the material in simplified and concise manner. I am willing to put in as much time as requested and have a pretty open schedule to work with.
I graduated from the University of Kansas and am currently attending pharmacy school in Denver. I was an undergraduate teaching assistant for Gen Chem II during the spring 2010 semester. I taught two lab sections and held weekly office hours to help students with homework assignments. I participated in a research study for the psychology department evaluating intragroup status and social presence in online fan groups. I spent a few years working as a resident assistant/director at one of the off-campus dorms and co-founded a recycling partnership for the Fall 2007 semester between The Home D ... read more
